Foodie Friday: Blue Fish Irving vs. Sushi Axiom Ft. Worth

I love sushi and I’m mystified why some people refuse to even try it.  Sashimi and I go way back.  Before grad school I frequented Piranha Killer Sushi in Arlington.  Then, there was one summer during grad school when I felt like I visited Sushi Axiom in Fort Worth on a weekly basis.  I absolutely love that place, but recently I tried another sushi hot spot that rivals my beloved Axiom: Blue Fish in Irving.  Three words: Mega Lobster Roll.  Sweet Jesus and God Bless Texas.

Brunch at Brownstone in Fort Worth

Brownstone offers an impressive menu of sophisticated down home cooking.  Dishes are familiar, yet impressive, both in portion size and flavor.  An ideal brunch spot on the edge of downtown in the trendy West 7th area- I’m looking forward to my next visit!

Spiral Diner in Fort Worth: The Perfect Fall Treat

I just can’t get enough of Spiral Diner.  I’ve been going here for at least the past three years and it’s always wonderful.  This vegan eatery has expanded from Fort Worth to Dallas, but the best Christmas gift of all would be having an Austin location to frequent as well (hint hint).  Spiral Diner has a charming retro 1950′s vibe, complete with a quirky sculpture to greet you in the foyer.  While it has delicious cold and hot entrees, the desserts are out of this world!  Carrot cake, sweet potato pie, apple pie- there’s so much to choose from.  My favorite is the chocolate chip cookie.  Can’t wait to see what Thanksgiving specials are served as well!

Charming Charlie Comes to Fort Worth

Charming Charlie has made its way west to Fort Worth.  I visited my first location in Houston during a Thanksgiving holiday about a year ago.  I cannot tell you how excited I was to see this accessories mega store right on Hulen and Bellaire, not too far from Texas Christian University, which will make it convenient to shop for all those Rush/Sorority events throughout the year.

What sets Charming Charlie apart from other retailers such as Forever 21, is its super organized and super color-coordinated arrangement of clothing and accessories.  This makes shopping efficient and satisfying.  We all know how frustrating it is to rummage through mounds clothing or tangled accessories only to leave the store empty-handed because we could never actually find anything in all the clutter.

Additionally, Charming Charlie’s  kaleidoscopic offerings are economical, with all the quality, glitz and glam of more expensive pieces.  You can find everything from simple, dainty necklaces, to bold bib necklaces, cocktail rings, purses and more.  If you’re in Tarrant County, I highly recommend you check it out and see for yourself.

Pam Grier: Foxy Brown Visits Fort Worth

Recently, movie star Pam Grier visited Fort Worth to promote the ground breaking of the Pam Grier Community Garden, located at 3520 East Berry Street.  The Community Garden is the brainchild of Jim and Gloria Austin, founders of the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum.

“We feel very fortunate to have been able to share our vision with Ms. Grier and partnering with her on our mutual vision of empowering the youth in the community by teaching them the benefits of healthy eating and providing a hands-on experience that will teach them how to take control of their own health and wellness when it comes to food and nutrition,” said museum Executive Director Gloria Austin.

I snapped these photos at Ms. Grier’s booksigning at The Dock Bookshop in East Fort Worth.  Ms. Grier, eloquently and passionately, spoke about the importance of community, education, health and hope.  Fittingly, the Pam Grier Community Garden, even in the beginning stages of construction,  already embodies these goals.

Fort Worth’s Best Brunch-Summer 2011

Dear Fashionistas,

I’d have to say that one of my main passions in life is The Arts.  Specifically, Fashion, Home Décor and the Culinary Arts.  Obviously, today’s post fits into the last category, and all three restaurants featured today are great places for the fashion-friendly to see and be seen.  Now I may be a serious Fashionista, but I’m an even more serious Foodie.  Therefore, I’m more forgiving about fashion faux pas (it’s all in good fun) but when it comes to food, I don’t play around!  I LOVE breakfast foods, and could enjoy them anytime of the day.  What’s better than breakfast for dinner?  I am constantly looking for the best brunch spots, wherever I am: California, Texas, Washington, D.C.- it doesn’t matter.  Today, though, I’m focusing on Fort Worth, Texas, and three restaurants: 1) Café Modern, 2) Taverna and 3) Café Brazil.  Here’s how they stack up.

Café Modern

Highly recommended by an artist friend of mine, and I had high expectations for Café Modern, located inside the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.  I skimmed the menu online and immediately spotted the Eggs Benedict with Crab- done.  However, when I arrived at the restaurant, that particular item was not on the menu (the online menu needed to be updated).  Disappointed but still optimistic, I ordered the Modern Benedict and my guest ordered the Pancakes

I found the Modern Benedict to be good, but not great.  Traditional with smoked ham, I prefer the more delicate crab in lieu of cumbersome ham slices.  The Lemony Hollandaise was nice, but it wasn’t the best citrus hollandaise I’d ever had.  The Fingerling Home Fries were nothing special.  Again, a good meal, but somehow the flavors just didn’t come together for me.  The Pancakes were rather good.  I’m not a fan of chocolate on pancakes and have never ordered them with chocolate chips, but I was pleasantly surprised how well the strawberries and Callebaut chocolate sauce complemented the light, spongy,  generous pancakes.  Overall, an extraordinary place to have an ordinary brunch.  Café Modern= C+

 Taverna

I’ve been going to Taverna for years, and I order the same thing each time, the Classic Eggs Benedict with Crab.  My other favorite item is the Vanilla French Toast.  Hmm, where do I start…the English muffins are always fresh and toasted to a crispy-chewy perfection.  The crab and poached eggs are an ideal duo but the Hollandaise is the star.  A skillful balance of egg yolk, butter and salt, the Hollandaise is plain and just plain delicious.  Often you find patrons scraping the plate in an attempt to leave none of this rich, buttery sauce behind.  The Breakfast Potatoes are a great companion to (and a great way to finish off ) the Hollandaise.

As for the French toast, again Taverna achieves an effortless balance of simple flavors- the result- an empty plate.  Fresh, thick slices of bread with a whisper of vanilla are served with a dollop of Mascarpone cheese, rather than the usual staid butter, and a side of mixed fruit.  Finally, I think what makes Taverna special, besides the food, is the atmosphere and dedicated staff.  Fun, friendly and fashionable, Taverna Fort Worth has never disappointed.  (Taverna Austin take note- your Eggs Benedict, Breakfast Potatoes and Vanilla French Toast fall short.)  Taverna Fort Worth= A-

Café Brazil

First, let me say I’ve been going to Café Brazil before either Café Modern or Taverna entered the picture.  Both Dallas locations are great.  Café Brazil is a great after-hours hang out once the clubs have closed.  It’s not unusual to have a line out the door and into the parking lot at 2AM.

I was ecstatic to discover a Fort Worth locale just across the street from TCU.  But whatever magic lives at the Dallas locations, it didn’t survive the move west.  To change things up, I ordered an Iced Chai Tea and French toast.  The eggs, bacon and chai were ok, but the French toast was thoroughly disappointing.  I suppose the profusion of cinnamon was meant to over-compensate for the stale bread, but there was nothing that could save this plate of mediocrity.  I hope that as time goes on, the Fort Worth Café Brazil will live up to the fond memories I have of the Dallas locations.  Café Brazil Fort Worth= D

Thread Thursday: Get Ready for Black Friday 2010

Hey folks,

I’m out of town, again, this time for Thanksgiving, but I’ve been searching around for some great deals in DFW (and one in Houston) for you to take advantage of for Black Friday…here’s what I’ve found thus far:

D Magazine’s Shop Talk has compiled a great list of Black Friday sales that include clothing from surrounding shops, music from Good Records, treats from Pink Berry and spa treatments at the Ritz!

Pink Memo reports that Inwood Village will have several holiday sales at participating stores, including Rich Hippie, Last Call Studio by Neiman Marcus and Bag’n Baggage.

The Parks Mall in Arlington has an extensive list of stores participating in Black Friday, including Zales, New York & Co. and JC Penney.

NBC DFW reports a list of great sales, including one exclusively for Northpark Mall in Dallas.

Ok, now for Houston.  I scoped out the Galleria Mall yesterday and lo and behold, Barneys Co-op is going out of business (just the Houston location!).  There are items up to 60% off and I didn’t want to withhold the news in case you’re in Houston or planning to return to Houston soon.

Behind the Seams- FIG: A Taste of European Fashion

Fort Worth, TX.  There’s a new FIG in town, and on the west side of the DFW metroplex.  Fort Worth is home to a new European ‘made to measure’ boutique, thanks to owners Dora Schabel and Robin Birdsong, two very talented (and very busy!) fashionistas.  I recently sat down with marketing director Sally Burt and merchandising manager Lauren Ulrick (pictured below, respectively) to discuss West 7th’s newest addition.  As we lounged in the front room of the studio, the ladies schooled me on European design, and why American women should embrace it.

According to Ulrick, many of us “play it safe, especially when it comes to business attire,” and I couldn’t agree more.  Far too often, women in the corporate sector find themselves confined to a dismal spectrum of black, gray, brown and other boring neutrals.  American women need no longer limit themselves; FIG is here to liberate us!

So why Fort Worth?  Believe or not, Dallas isn’t the only city where you can get your couture fix.  Fort Worth has many high-end boutiques and West 7th  is definitely an up and coming, upscale urban development- a perfect fit for FIG.  This city also boasts a strong retail support network called FOWO, or Fort Worth For Women.  This private business network focuses on supporting local women-owned retail businesses, with an emphasis on quality, community and personal service.  The women at FIG believe in those same ideals.  ”We’re not here to compete, but to create a market,” says Ulrick.  “We want customers to have a European experience here, one that’s relaxed, fun, not rushed.”  In agreement with this ‘European aesthetic’ Burt adds “we want this to be a good experience- when customer service is great, customers will want to return.”

I know the feeling.  I’ve visited three times since first discovering the design studio earlier last month.  There is something quite…transcendent about it all.  Surrounded by exquisite fabrics, one-of-a-kind accessories and an unparalleled attention to detail, not only in the clothing but also by the staff, it’s hard to stay away.  And that’s just the way FIG would have it.

What’s wonderfully unique about FIG is its “made to measure” concept.  As Burt explains, “people don’t understand this concept of ‘fitting perfectly.’  When we shop, we just have to take what’s there (a dress in a great color but with an odd hemline or pant with the right length but an ill-fitting waist), and then alter it.”  Well, at FIG, you don’t have to settle.  The ’made to measure’ concept takes the gamble and risk out of shopping.  Your measurements are taken and a garment is created exclusively for you!  Another unique feature of FIG is its fair trade model.  The European designers decide the price and maintain autonomy over their respective clothing lines.  Prices range on average from just $100 to $2000 for couture creations, including wedding dresses!

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to have a designer boutique of this caliber in Fort Worth.  While I love Dallas, everything designer need not be located there.  And by the way, in case you’re feeling a tingling of sticker shock, Thread Conscious has never been about being cheap; it’s about finding quality pieces for reasonable prices.  And that’s exactly what FIG has.

Nik
