Fabulous Finds at FIG Finale in Dallas

Art Deco Beaded Clutch- Front

One of the first things I saw was this stunning Bougainvillea clutch.  I love the intricate beading and unique shape!  I’m not sure if this is a particular style, but I’m calling it an “art deco” clutch.  Also the basic colors make this bag suitable for almost any ensemble.

The next items I went on the hunt for were cocktails rings.  I walked away with three very beautiful and very different styles.

Stunning Rings

I’m not sure what the purple stone is, but I really liked the simple shape.  It’s the color that makes it a stand out piece.  It’s very feminine and fun.  I find this stone to be almost…calming.

Gold Ring with Pink Stone- Top View

What I loved about this ring was that it was ultra-feminine.  Small and dainty, this style shines because of the pop of color!  It’s a beautiful pale pink that would look great against any skin tone.  I wouldn’t really call it a cocktail ring due to its small size, but I would certainly want to wear this ring out and about (and I will!).

Smoky Quartz Cocktail Ring- Side Heart Detail

Now here’s my show stopper!  This is a ginormous, spectacular statement piece.  It is the epitome of a glamorous, cocktail ring.  The gold body has a “twisted rope” and heart design on the sides, which cradles the substantial smoky quartz, measuring almost a full inch across.

What I really loved about this ring was its regal quality.  It’s not for the faint of heart, or those with subtle tastes.  And I almost lost it when I set it down for one second and another fashionista scooped it up!  She decided it wasn’t for her, and it was then that I decided it was going home with moi.  Because the stone is brown, it will also enhance many different ensembles.

So that’s it for me! I may have only brought home four items, but it’s quality over quantity. These were definitely quality pieces that I’m going to be able to wear for a long, long time. Restaurant Week 2010 (Aug. 16-22)

What?  Food on a  fashion blog?  It’s not unheard of.  Many a fashionista moonlights as a foodie.  Just look at Atlantis Home’s fabulous author Judy Aldridge.  Not only are the rare furnishings of her home decadent yet inviting, but she also manages to capture the same mood with the recipes she posts.  You can find recipes for dishes that are healthy and hearty, like zucchini fritters or red bean chili, to those that satisfy the sweet tooth (mixed berry pie and orange chocolate chippers, anyone?)

In the spirit of food and fashion, I am excited that KRLD Restaurant Week is upon us again.  Presented by Central Market, guests can order gourmet, 3-course prix-fixe dinners for only $35 at participating restaurants in Dallas/Fort Worth (tax, tips and drinks not included).  Proceeds go to benefit North Texas Food Bank and Lena Pope Home.

In Fort Worth, I personally enjoy Cast Iron at the Omni hotel and Ferre Ristorante e Bar but I’d also like to try out Top Chef Casey Thompson’s Brownstone, located in Fort Worth’s quaint but posh West 7th development.  In Dallas, you can’t go wrong with Dakota’s Restaurant, Samar by Stephan Pyles(get the black rice with fried squid or the potatoes and chorizo!) and Nobu.

So once again, here’s an opportunity to look good, eat good and do good for others.  Bon appetit!

For reservations, call the restaurant directly or book online through Open Table.

West Village Shopping

Dear You,

What can I say?  I love Dallas’s Uptown scene, but  I rarely have the time to stop and visit.  Any time I can swing by, I make sure to hit up the West Village.  So when a friend invited me to lunch at the chic Toulouse Café and Bar (part of the delicious Lombardi Family Concepts), I couldn’t resist stopping by a few boutiques.

While the drive there was horrendous, the day was glorious.  I’m sorry- I have to take a moment here- when there’s a stalled car on the opposite side of the freeway, why does everyone on my side slow to a crawl?  To those nosey folks: pay attention and drive sensibly before you cause a wreck on our side of the freeway too!  But I digress.

The weather was perfect for al fresco dining and shopping.  My friend enjoyed a salad while I had the Vegetarian Sandwich with Pommes Frites: marinated portobello mushroom, goat cheese, tomato confit, lettuce & basil pesto, accompanied by delectably crisp and light fries.  OMG, to-die-for!  I would drive back to Dallas just to eat here- in fact, I plan to have the Lobster and Rock Shrimp Risotto on my next visit!  But I digress again.

West Village is nestled within the affluent Uptown area of Dallas, and is the perfect place to sip and shop.  After lunch, I headed over to Epic, to see what was new and on sale.

Purple Studded Belt

I found a really great purple belt, embellished with brass studs.  I love these types of items because this is where fashion meets function- a wide belt like this is theanswer to any girl’s prayers- it creates a waist line while disguising any body sins (I have a few body sins lingering from Thanksgiving and Christmas, ok!).  The belt is also a great mix of femininity and rock ‘n roll edginess.

Close Up of Hook Closure

I also found a pair of glamorous and glittering tear-drop loop earrings.  I love these because they can be both dressy and casual, frame the face well, and the unique texture really is responsible for these earrings radiant shimmer.

Bling Bling Earrings

Next, I visited J’AdoreParis for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by their selection of accessories.  They had very unique tribal-inspired pieces, which I always find interesting.  After a long debate, I settled on a burgundy pendulum necklace (burgundy can be chic, I tell you) and earring set as well as a soothing rust-colored knit scarf, all at 50% off.

"Aztec" Inspired Necklace and Earrings

Super Soft!

J’Adore also had really cute dresses, jackets, blouses and loads of statement jewelry.

Perfect LBD

Fun Beaded Chrystal Cuff

For my last stop, I visited Pitaya, also new to me, and loved the hand-crafted, vintage folksy look of their selections (think Anthropologie).  But I fell in love with the owl necklaces- what an assortment!  In another post, I’ll have to show the little collection I’ve got going now- antique malls are a goldmine for such things!

Pitaya had a white owl pendant adorned with crystals and glitter, but I wasn’t sure it was right for me.  I also saw another owl necklace which incorporated a watch into the design- very cute.  But then there was this crystal-incrusted, silver number that had my name on it.  Isn’t he cute?

Owl with an Attitude

 Tips for this Trip:

1. We all know Dallas traffic requires some patience.  Expect the unexpected delays on I-30 and I-75.

2. Wear comfortable shoes for this trek, but it’s an urban oasis, so look cute.  It’s a place to see and be seen.

3. The chance of parking in front of a store is slim to none, so I suggest using the parking garage.  Beware, it’s a 2-lane garage, so be careful going around corners, as there could be on-coming traffic.  Do find a spot as close as possible to the elevator, so there’s not a long haul through the lot with tons of shopping bags.

4. I suggest starting at Taco Diner or Toulouse Café and Bar, shopping and ending with a visit at Pacuigo for gelato.

 Happy shopping!

Nik

Sea of Shoes/Atlantis Home Vintage at V.O.D.

It's ok. I know you want me.

Please, prepare yourself for a little something I like to call, “Jewelry Mecca,” better known as the vintage collection of Atlantis Home’s Judy Aldridge. Light a candle, burn some incense, do a chant- whatever gets your mind right, honey. And when you’re ready, come on in…

Guests arriving...

The air was abuzz with electric anticipation as guests arrived to pay homage to, and cold hard cash for, some very divine vintage pieces. Shoppers swirled around the displays, reverently caressing and tenderly holding the necklaces and belts before trying them on. Ever so often, the jewelry was rearranged and pieces were added or taken away as they found new homes around the necks or waists of jewelry enthusists.

Jane & Judy Aldridge

I chatted with Jane and Judy a while before spying a few items I thought would look good in my own collection. Scroll on down and prepare to be amazed!

Jewelry Mecca

I swear, the jewelry practically called out from the table, “Take me! I’m yours!”  Below: blinged out shrimp, octopus and monkey, oh my!

Stingray necklace anyone?

Vintage Upside Down Bottle Necklace

I finally settled on this piece- an “Upside Down Bottle” necklace. I immediately loved the shape of it and the stone was a nice finish. I also thought it was the perfect length, as most of my vintage necklaces are not as long as I’d like them to be. I feel this a perfect statement necklace.

All in all, this was a wonderful event, and I’m so glad to have met a lot of down-to-earth and very talented folks. Thanks to Karen, Judy and Jane and all those who made this event spectacular!

Accents Fashion Accessories in Arlington! Dallas Women’s Museum Exhibit!

Accents Fashion Accessories

Hello,
I am happy to announce the opening of Accents Fashion Accessories in Arlington Highlands off I-20 and Matlock! The first store is located in Dallas in the West End and it was always a trek for me to get over there, so it’s great that the store in now in Tarrant County. : )

I met Lucy Crowhurst, the owner, a couple of years of ago, and she is the sweetest person! She’s also an exceptional business woman, with a little one at home and one on the way, so kudos to you Lucy!

What’s great about this shop is that it’s meticulously organized, in my opinion. I too often find that stores geared toward the female persuasion are a hot mess when it comes to organization- clothes are strewn all over the store, sale items are mixed in with regular items, other products are thrown into huge bins in which you literally have to dig to see all the merchandise. Eh hem, that’s hell on a fresh, new manicure. Not cute, I tell ya, not cute at all.

Anyhoo, Accents has everything displayed for easy access and observation. No clutter on display, just cuteness on hangers and tables. Now that’s what I call sensible chic! I love cocktail rings and I have to admit, Accents had some of the most unique pieces I’ve seen, and I went to the Dallas Jewelry show at Market Hall in Dallas this October! I saw no repeats! My fav color is gray/silver and I found an adorable ring with gray stones set in gold. In 2007 D Magazine recognized Accents as its pick for best Dallas shopping and The Dallas Observer honored the store in two catergories, “Best Store in West Village” and “Best Shiny Objects.” I couldn’t agree more. Check out my pics and Accents in the Arlington Highlands! You can also shop online at http://www.accentsfashionaccessories.com/index.php.

Great shopping!

Check Out!

As for the Dallas Women’s Museum, it has a very special exhibit going on now through Jan. 24, 2010:
“Purse & the Person: A Century of Women’s Purses”
In the words of “The Zoe,” “I die.” I want to see this exhibit, after final exams of course, and if I get a chance to go, I’ll report back what I find. One of the purposes of this blog is to examine fashion on a higher intellectual level, and I can’t think of a better starting topic than this. Lastly, I like volunteering with this museum, though I regret it’s not nearly as often as I’d like. I missed the Wine Women & Shoes extravaganza this year which is always a blast. But at least I have time to check out this exhibit. For more information, please see
