Mother’s Day Gift Guide by April Golightly

Fashionistas,

I asked fellow blogger/attorney April of April Golightly for her take on the best Mother’s Day gifts for this year. April is expecting her first bundle of joy, so she was the perfect mom-to-be to ask about special gifts for one of the most special days of the year. She also asked me to do a guest post for her blog covering fashion for lawyers. Enjoy!

Mother's Day Gift Guide
Mother’s Day Gift Guide by aprilgolightly featuring a botkier satchel

Guest Post by April Golightly

On Mother’s Day, I normally think of what my mom might like. She does not like flowers or brunch as she has a ton of allergies that prevent her from receiving the normal Mother’s Day gifts. I usually buy her a spa day or anything that I can find in leopard print. I have tried to purchase her purses, but she has her own style and usually does not end up using the ones I choose. I gave her my Louis Vuitton last year and she actually used that for a while.

As a soon to be mother, I am due with my first child on July 15, I am making a Mother’s Day wish list from my point of view this year. Considering that I am in my third trimester, I think I deserve a gift. In fact, I think that all pregnant women deserve at least 4 gifts per pregnancy. One gift for each trimester and then one after the baby is born.

1. The Chic Bag
I have a bag obsession and since it is spring, I would love to carry a new faded jade bag. This one is perfect for a mommy as it can be shoulder bag as well as cross body bag. The hands free option is awesome.

2. The Statement Necklace
When your outfits start to get boring because your weight is fluctuating or you fear that your child will spit up on your Miu Miu top, you can spice things up with a statement necklace. Pick one like this that will go with jeans and a t-shirt, a t-shirt dress, or a basic maxi.

3. The Earrings
If the baby is pulling on your necklace, try a pair of statement earrings instead. Might want to even go clip-on for your ear safety.

4. The Best Flats
My balance is completely off and unless I want to fall, I have to wear flats. I am not kidding…I am the heel queen and could run in most of my shoes. Since the second trimester started, I have fallen twice in heels. To be safe, I am not wearing heels until I have the baby and lose some of this belly. If I am going to wear flats, they have to be fabulous and comfortable. These are awesome. I also went a little crazy at the Tory Burch outlet. The traditional Tory Burch flats do not work for me, but I have wanted a pair for a while. I asked the sales person and she directed me to the most comfortable pairs. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want.

5. The Custom Necklace
Since I just got married and am sporting new initials, I have been dying to get a necklace with them on it. I would like to get a nameplate of my daughter’s name as well once she is born. Still gotta pick a name!

6. The Trendy Cuff
If you wear no other jewelry as a mother, I think you can rock a nice cuff that does not have any small parts that can be eaten by the baby. This one is so much fun and I want it.

Which Mother’s Day gift do you want?

Fashion Tech: 3D Virtual Shopping from Swivel by FaceCake

Fashionistas,

As you know, Austin Fashion Week is almost here.  My inbox is flooded with the latest updates from AFW, but one of the most exciting is Swivel by FaceCake.  This product utilizes Microsoft Kinect technology and allows you to virtually try on clothing and accessories without ever needing to disrobe.  Once you find an outfit you love, you can save a snapshot and send it to a friend- and who doesn’t love social shopping!  Check out the demo here.

Swivel by FaceCake debuted at Bloomingdales in 2012 during New York Fashion Week.  Austin Fashion Week 2013 will feature not only Swivel by FaceCake, but also Swivel Close-Up, where you can try on makeup, eye-wear, and more.

I’m sure Cher Horowitz would have loved this back in the day…am I dating myself?  As if.

Nik

Behind the Seams: Austin Jewelry Designer Catherine Nicole

In our latest installment of Behind the Seams, we explore the career and creativity of Austin-based jewelry designer, Catherine Nicole.  I had the pleasure of meeting Catherine during Austin Fashion Week 2011 and I’ve been an admirer of her work ever since.  What makes Catherine’s company and jewelry so special is that $5 from every purchase supports her philanthropic efforts to prevent young girls from becoming child brides.  Catherine’s earthy, organic and feminine jewelry has been featured in major publications such as Entertainment Weekly, Good Housekeeping and Life & Style.

(All photos courtesy of CatherineNicole.com)

1. Tell us a little about your experience at the Parsons School of Design; when did you realize you were interested in design and why did you choose that particular school/career path?

I originally went to Parsons because I wanted to be a costume designer.  I liked the idea that you can tell a story about someone by the clothes you put her/him in.  I was born in New York and was spending my post-graduate years teaching in Spain when 9/11 happened.  I was ready to pursue my design work close to home, and Parsons turned out to be exactly the designer’s heaven that I hoped it would be.

2. You’re very well traveled; Spain, Africa, India…have you traveled since childhood or did your travels start during school?

I’ve traveled since childhood.  My mother grew up in Rome, and I have family all over the world. I’ve had wanderlust my whole life and as I got older, I found ways to travel to more exotic places.  I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to see the world and learn about different people and cultures. It’s a huge influence on my work.

3. What inspired you most about your travels?

In a lot of societies, the ornamentation of the people is more telling than the garments they wear.  The jewelry is obviously less utilitarian and often more expressive than the apparel.  That’s what inspired me to do statement jewelry.  I also love the textiles, colors, tiles and architecture that I’ve seen in my travels, and often draw inspiration from there.

4. Fashion and philanthropy make a great partnership; with all the risks inherent to starting a business, how can a business owner successfully manage a new business while supporting a worthy cause at the same time?

Well, I have the non-profit aspect built into the for-profit aspect.  In other words, I only donate from money that I make.  I used to support other projects, but was giving out more than a company of my size really could afford.  Now, I only give from what we earn.  $5 from every purchase is no small amount to us, but I didn’t want to collect such a small amount that I was barely helping anyone.

5. How did you come up with the concept for Chicks Against Child Brides?  Tell us a little about BRAC and how your initiative supports their mission.

I was moved to chills the first time I saw the original Girl Effect video and knew I wanted to get involved.  Since many of my customers are brides, it seemed a natural connection to take on the plight of the child bride.  BRAC is a UN-funded non-profit that focuses on micro-loans, and their Girl Centers really educate these kids about entrepreneurship, independence, and provide them a safe place to learn and get their businesses started.

Because I don’t have the kind of job that inherently gives back (like a doctor, counselor, teacher, etc..), it’s important to me that my company creates a way to benefit the world.  So this is not a temporary project for me, but rather a core component of the business that the company will always run on.

6. What is your most rewarding and most challenging experience as an entrepreneur and why?

Oftentimes being an entrepreneur is just as creative as being a designer.  This isn’t something I thought about when I started my business, and it’s one of my favorite aspects of it now.  As a small business, I rely on innovative ideas for my branding and marketing.  It’s a fun challenge that brings me closer to my customers and able to provide a more genuine product and service.

7. Looking back on your experiences in the fashion industry, what do you know now that you wish you’d known at the beginning of your journey?

I could have saved a lot of money if I knew then to think outside the box more, but I don’t know that I would have done anything differently.  By working the markets, runways, wholesale and PR circuit, I learned all the ins and outs of my industry.  I certainly do things differently now, but it’s only because I know from experience what doesn’t work for me about the mainstream route.

8. For anyone interested in pursuing a career in fashion design, what is the most important piece of advice you would give him or her?

Take an internship or internships.  I had to go through a lot of trial-and-error that I could have skipped over had I worked in other houses first.  And if you plan on starting your own line or store, be super frugal.  It’s easy to spend a lot of money at the beginning with the expectation that great things will happen from it.  But your business may have something else in store for you, and you have to gradually allow it to shape itself.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Catherine Nicole is a great example of a company with a heart and a conscience, not only focused on creating one-of-a-kind statement jewelry, but also focused on empowering women.  Whether you’re a bride, shopping for gifts or love the idea of giving back, Catherine Nicole has something uniquely beautiful for you.

Christmas 2012 Gift Guide, Sort Of

Dear Fashionistas,

I don’t know about you, but venturing out this year into the abyss that is holiday retail seems more daunting than ever.  Black Friday was a disaster, and though I really like brick and mortar shopping, I think embracing online shopping this year will prove just as satisfying.

So in thinking about the upcoming year, I wanted to create a gift guide

OK, I have to come clean.  For weeks, I’ve been trying to come up with a holiday gift guide, but I gots nothin’.  Nada, zip.  I even reached out to friends for suggestions.  Perhaps it’s a bit of writer’s block, or perhaps it’s the realization that everyone and their mama is throwing up gift guides all over the net.  What’s one less gift guide this year?

I mean, there’s the usual hat, scarf or tie for the guy or girl in your life, or for your spirited friends, there’s always a gift set for him or her.  For the foodie friend, you could always make reservations at their favorite restaurant, or better yet, have the food come to them.

If you’re looking for vintage things, I’ve got you covered- after all, it is cold outside nowSubscription services are great for folks who like gifts that keep on giving, month after month.  And finally, for the loved one who has everything, why not donate to their favorite charity on their behalf?  Yes, who needs another overly-involved-glitzy-kitschy gift guide?

Fashionably Yours,

Nik

Media Release – For Immediate Release

October 2012

The Launch of A New Republic

A local online fashion destination has made the bold move to join the likes of 99Dresses, BigCommerce and the many other Australian-founded websites entering the global playing field.

Sydney based Young Republic has set their sights on becoming the go-to destination for designers and lovers of independent fashion all around the world with the recent launch of their new international online marketplace. Visit http://www.youngrepublic.com.

Founded by Aussie duo Marianne Sea and Andrew Yang, Young Republic features a plethora of unique, eclectic and one of a kind womenswear, menswear, jewellery, accessories and products for the home created by international independent and emerging designers. Likened to Etsy for fashion, the appeal for these designers to sell on Young Republic is a no-brainer – the website allows them to transact online with no joining, listing, or upfront fees; features a dead-easy portal to manage products, orders and stock inventory; and provides free-to-use social interaction, community management and marketing tools to assist designers to grow their brands.

Designers are quick to jump on board this new opportunity to bring indie fashion to the masses. Young Republic’s newly launched site already features over 750 designers from all over the world destined to be the next big names in fashion.

“The beauty of Young Republic is that it is so youthful and current. It is a fantastic tool for putting designers in touch with their target market and giving each label an opportunity to be seen,” states Lauren Brooks, the Australian designer behind independent fashion label Baumbach.

Fashion lovers from all over the world are able to shop the streets of Sydney, New York, San Francisco, London, Paris and Tokyo without leaving the comfort of their own homes, and can easily discover and recommend pieces that cannot be found in local stores.

“People love going to the weekend markets because they can buy unique one-of-a-kind items you won’t find with the big brands,” says Young Republic co-founder Marianne Sea, “We wanted to bring that exciting experience online”.

Meet Haja, Owner of Toombas & Buy Tickets to Fashion Fushion 2012

Dear Fashionistas,

The most stylish combo is fashion and philanthropy, hands down.  If you love fashion, and giving back to the community, then this Saturday is an opportunity to do what you love!

Toombas Jeans and Denim Wear will host Fashion Fusion: The Color of Life, an annual celebration of style and music on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at The Marchesa Hall & Theatre in Austin. A portion of the event proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen Austin for the third consecutive year.  Singer and reality television personality Trina Braxton of WE TV’s hit series The Braxtonswill also perform her new single, “Party or Go Home” at the event.

Tickets can be purchased for $40 for general admission and $75 for VIP seating. To purchase tickets, visit www.toombas.net.

I asked Haja Scott, fashionista and co-founder of Toombas Jeans, a few questions about her growing business and fashion in general.

1. ‘Toombas’ celebrates beautiful curves, what does the word mean/stand for?

Your Tumba (actual word spelling) is your BUTT in the West African language, Krio. My family is from West Africa so we decided to use this word as inspiration for our curvy line.

2. What makes denim a universal fashion statement?

Denim was originally used as a working fabric but as time progressed, we began to see more manipulated denim – stretch denim, selvage denim, soft denim, bull denim, destruction and faded washed denim, colored denim, denim shorts, skirts, dresses, jackets, and NOW even cocktail denim!  There’s no way a person couldn’t find their OWN style in denim and that’s why we love it!

3. What’s your favorite piece from your collection?

From our new Denim Cocktail collection, I LOVE our Color Blocked Pencil Skirt! We use stretch denim (of course!) and various solid and/or colorful fabrics to create one-of-a-kind color blocking. It’s awesomely unique and can be mixed & matched with so many pieces in a typical wardrobe!

4. Complete this statement: “The perfect casual style is jeans and…”:

White Tank/stretch Tee & earrings that make a statement (simple & stylish).

I couldn’t agree more and I love a good fashion history lesson!  Don’t forget, you can purchase tickets at www.toombas.net.

Fashionably Yours,
Nik

Austin Fashion Week 2012: Runway Recap

Nikki Poulos

Dear Fashionistas,

It’s been a busy week full of models, make up artists and fashion designers, all strutting their stuff at the Driskill Runways & Marketplace events.  As ecclectic as Austin itself, I witnessed enviable designs for men, women, plus-size and children, with the designers mirroring their fabulous creations.  Highlights from these three days include Austin’s very own IsabellaRose Fashion by 10 year-old designer Isabella Taylor, Parrott by Sarah Parrot and Nikki Poulos.

Sparkle and shine were not only on the runway, but also in the Driskill Marketplace, where boutiques set up shop to offer stylish guests jewelry, handbags, shoes and more.  I was amazed by Crystal 4U, who will bedazzle any pair of shoes you have, giving them a new lease on life.  From sneakers to stilettos, Crystal4U can transform your shoes from boring to bling!  I also stopped by Raven + Lily, a “socially responsible brand dedicated to empowering women through design partnerships and sustainable economic opportunities.”  This brand offers jewelry and accessories created by women in Ethiopia, India and Cambodia, who are employed through fair trade standards. 100% of the net proceeds support Raven + Lily’s mission to empower women.  I love fashion you can feel good about!

Special shout out to 2012 CW Star Winner Mic Trotty, who I had the pleasure of chatting up between runway shows.  He shares my love of fashion, media and nerdiness, also being a fellow comic book collector and Batman fan.  Mic will continue to cover entertainment events around Austin as the reigning CW Star, so please show him some love and go ‘Like’ his Facebook Page.  Congrats Mic!

Scroll down to see the collection of fabulous runway shows at the historic Driskill Hotel and don’t forget that tonight is the Austin Fashion Awards Presented by CW Austin at Austin Music Hall.  Red carpet starts at 6:30PM and the show at 7:30PM.  You can view a complete list of nominees here and purchase tickets here.  Happy Fashion Week!

Fashionably Yours,

Nik
