As TWF bid adieu to 2012, it highlighted 12 of its favorite articles, all worth reading.  I recommend checking out the Experts’ Wisdom Series, but you can review all 12 articles here.  All the best to Third Wave Fashion in 2013!

Media Monday: The First Tee FORE Fashion, Oct. 19th

Dear Fashionistas,

This just came across my desk from our Austin Fashion Week friends- a very posh combo of golf, fashion and giving back.

Nik

Friday, October 19th:

“[A] local non-profit brings fashion to the fore.

The First Tee of Greater Austin is hosting The First Tee FORE Fashion, a luncheon and fashion show benefiting the non-profit.

The First Tee provides young people with educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choice through the game of golf. 98% of participants who stay in The First Tee program for two years graduate high school.

On the fashion side of things, the runway show will feature the chic and easy fashions of Tibi, who will debut their 2013 Resort Collection. Founder and designer Amy Smilovic will journey from her studio in SoHo, NY to make a special guest appearance at the event.

At the event, which will also feature jewelry of Kendra Scott, you can chat with the Tibi designer, who was inspired to launch her line while an expat in Hong Kong, and you will even be able to pre-order pieces from the new collection.

The fashion show, scheduled to start at 12:45pm, will be preceded by a VIP reception and luncheon. Purchase your tickets before space runs out!

Media Monday: Senate to Review Fashion Copyright Bill IDPA S. 3523

Dear Fashionistas,

Heads up, the Innovative Design Protection Act, aka the “fashion copyright” bill, is back according to Susan Scafidi’s blog Counterfeit Chic.  I wrote about the former iteration of this bill in 2010, then known as the Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act (IDPPPA, S.3728).

Besides the title change, Scafidi summed up the other major changes to the bill:

“…the biggest changes…in the bill from the House version and the previous Senate version are the following:

  • a provision requiring detailed written notice to alleged infringers, and
  • a 21-day moratorium on commencement of an action after that notice.  And no, damages won’t accrue during those 3 weeks.”

You may also recall from my 2010 post that opponents of the bill claimed “This bill, [is] more appropriately called the Destruction of Affordable Fashion Bill.“  Well, we will have to wait and see what the Senate decides in the end.

Scafidi also nicely summed up the U.S. Court of Appeals’ (2nd Circuit) decision regarding Christian Louboutin v. YSL:

“Christian justly kept his red sole trademark, albeit with a carveout for completely monochromatic red shoes like YSL’s; the district court’s overreaching attempt to ban all single-color trademarks in fashion was tossed out like a bad impulse purchase.”

Lastly, I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the Fashion Law Insititute’s “pop-up clinics” during New York Fashion Week, providing pro bono legal services to designers and fashion professionals.  This is a wonderful way to help others, and helping people succeed is always  in style.

Media Monday: Kelly Cutrone’s If You Have to Cry Go Outside

Dear Fashionistas,

Having visited my blog and vintage store, a friend from grad school sent me Kelly Cutrone’s New York Times Bestseller If  You  Have  to  Cry  Go  Outside.  I didn’t know what to expect from this fashion meets self-help autobiography, therefore I had no expectations.  But I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

After watching Bravo’s Kell on Earth, Cutrone’s reality show about her PR firm People’s Revolution, my impression of her was that she was no-nonsense, super-stressed, hard-edged and sometimes downright rude.  The book downplays none of this and is refreshingly unapologetic.  But it also highlights Cutrone’s softer side.  Note that “softer” does not equal weaker.  Throughout the book, we see Cutrone falter, fail, crash and burn, and then ultimately rise from the ashes like a Phoenix, stronger than ever in her convictions, drive to succeed and will to survive in the cut-throat world of fashion.

Having read If  You  Have  to  Cry, I walked away with a deeper appreciation and respect for Cutrone’s experiences and triumphs in life and work, and I applaud her for her transparency.  What resonated with me most was her struggle to overcome fear in general, and the fear of failure specifically, something we perfectionists know all too well.  One of the reasons I started this blog was to face my own FEAR of failure head on, and then beat it down like it stole something!  I’m grateful for every reader I have and for everyday I get to share something with you here on Thread Conscious.

So, I highly recommend picking up Kelly Cutrone’s book; it’s a great read and available on Amazon here.

Fashionably Yours,

Nik

Media Monday: Fashionista Reacts to Saint Laurent Losing the “Yves”

Fashionistas,

This past week, famed fashion house Yves Saint Laurent dropped the “Yves” for “Paris.”  Now named Saint Laurent Paris under the helm of new creative director Hedi Slimane, Fashionista.com has been inspired to take some creative liberty with other fashion brand’s logos.  Ramsbottom, anyone?

Media Monday: Tumblr Embraces Advertising

Dear Fashionistas,

Crissie Fuller at online blogging bible IFB (Independent Fashion Blogger) reports that Tumblr will start selling advertising units on the “Featured” section of the dashboard as soon as May 2nd.  Two years ago, Tumblr CEO David Karp expressly stated his opposition to advertising on the platform.  However, the site’s rapid growth appears to have dictated a change in attitude.  Though I’m new to Tumblr, I’m not at all surprised by this announcement.  This is the nature of Business: grow, make money, rinse, repeat.

What do you think?  Is this Tumblr’s way of selling out or a smart move?

Media Monday: Everlane- Quality Clothing that Won’t Break the Bank

Fashionistas,

From the beginning, Thread Conscious‘ motto has been “Never Pay Retail.  Always Look Fabulous.”  Well I’ve found a company after my own heart, Everlane, a new start-up “which produces designer-quality items at realistic prices,” according to a recent Business Insider article.

Everlane founder, Michael Preysman, knows all too well just how much luxury items are marked up- sometimes ten times more than what it actually cost to make the item.  Preysman thinks consumers are savvy enough to look for better deals, and Everlane provides just that: t-shirts on the online-only retailer’s site cost a mere $15.  Everlane also offers sweatshirts, ties and belts, and will soon expand to women’s clothing.  As soon as they do, I’ll be all over this website.

Check out the full Business Insider article here.

Fashionably Yours,

Nik
