Thread Thursday: Guest Blogger ‘Streatstyle’ Shares Vintage Treats from Dublin, Ireland

Dear Fashionistas,

I asked friend and fellow blogger Annie Streater over at Streatstyle if she’d go on a vintage hunt around town, i.e. Dublin, Ireland (YAY!)  and report back what she found.  She graciously agreed and you are in for a treat!

Fashionably Yours,

Nik

I’ve lived in Dublin for two years, but somehow I haven’t yet managed to explore the vintage scene here. Apart from the odd flea market here and there, I never thought the city had much to offer, but a quick search on Yelp revealed a multitude of vintage and second hand stores dotted around the city. In fact, it seemed that many of the best ones were located in and around Dublin’s Temple Bar district, better known for its touristy pubs and restaurants than for its one-of-a-kind shopping. So with an open mind and a fistful of cash, I made my way down the cobbled streets to discover what wonders awaited.

1. Eager Beaver

This isn’t so much of a vintage shop as a streetwear store selling emo hoodies and peusdo-alternative polka dot prom dresses, but they did have a thrifters’ corner with a small selection of vintage dresses and a rack of second hand overcoats, where I found a couple of gems. Monochrome printed dresses are my Achilles’ heel! This dalmation dress (€29) has a very flattering shape and could be worn to the office, on a first date, or for a night out with the girls.

I also picked up a long, gray wool coat (€30), something I’ve been seeking for a couple of years now. It’s a little on the loose side but I’m sure with a wide belt and a couple of layers underneath, it’ll become a staple of mine next winter!

 2. Lucy’s Lounge

Located just a couple of minutes’ walk away, Lucy’s is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of real vintage gems, second hand high street items, and upcycled pieces, personalised in-store by the staff.

I spent close to an hour in here, and probably could have spent longer. The selection was mostly 70s and 80s, an era that doesn’t fit in with my personal style, but there were a lot of really cool things that I tried on anyway.

I loved the classic seventies style collar on this plaid dress, and the belt was a nice detail. It’s not really my style, though, and as much as I thought about how I could modify it (shorten the sleeves to cap, bring up the hem), at €25 it was a bit on the pricey side for something I didn’t love.

In the end, I left with two pieces: a zebra-motif cardigan (€12), and this gold mini dress (€10). This’ll be a great day-to-night piece, worn with a chunky black knit and lace up boots at the office, then transformed into a disco diva look with a pair of black pumps and a cocktail ring. Very Rachel Zoe, don’t you think?

3. FanciSchmancy

I forgot to get any photos of this place, probably because I was completely preoccupied once the owner, Paul, announced that everything was 50% off. The selection was almost exclusively 80s – a lot of colour blocking, shine, and power dressing. Most of it was too frumpy for me; I tried on a few long dresses, but ended up ditching all but one of them. This black dress is very simple, but I love the eye-catching neckline. I’m looking forward to wearing it with a skinny leopard belt and a bright red lip.

As I left the changing room, I noticed a very colourful bundle of cosy-looking fabric peeking out from underneath a pile of garments that had been set aside. I fished it out and to my utter surprise and delight, discovered a beautiful long wool coat with a fabulous green and purple print. It was so soft and warm that I was already set on buying it, but when Paul told me it was Diane Von Furstenburg and that it was €20, I couldn’t believe it – what a find! This will look great belted with boots, or worn under my other long coat, or heck, even just around the house as a cosy robe! It even has a cool DVF hologram sewn into the label.

With the 50% off, these two pieces came to a total of €32.50 – a great bargain! Paul also recommended a couple of other places in the area, including one which he described as having more of a “grungy” vibe – exactly what I was looking for!

4. Siopaella at 9 Crowe Street

Definitely more my style. A great selection of 90s, 00s and current day vintage, set in a beautiful, well-laid out store. I could tell right away that I was going to find some good stuff here. Black sheer maxi skirts, velvet cropped tops, plaid shirts… even though I was too young to really live through the grunge era of the 90s, it didn’t matter. I was here now.

The staff were super friendly, and it didn’t take long before a young lad offered to start a room for me. This is something that you don’t get in other stores here – it’s very common in the US, but it was the first time I’d experienced it in Dublin. With more items in hand, I settled in behind the curtain and was immediately charmed by the fish eye mirror on the wall; a novel way to maximize a small fiiting space. Here I’m trying on a grey cropped tshirt and black maxi skirt. I love this look – a great mix of the youthful carefree nature of yesteryear, and a nod to the modern revamped midriff trend. I’m hanging on to this one!

This store has great business sense, as they offer exchange within 7 days – something I’ve never seen before in a vintage place. They also buy, offering you 20% of the final selling price. Of your unwanted designer and high-end pieces. Alternatively you can consign and get 50% of the final price. With so many ways to change up your wardrobe, they definitely live up to their slogan: “recycling and restyling”. Along with that adorable cropped grey tshirt, I picked up a few more great pieces:

I’m not usually into florals at all, but the muted tones of this tshirt (€12) really appealed to me. Worn with denim cut offs or the all-purpose black maxi skirt, this piece can work all year round.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a nice faux fur jacket for some time now, but most vintage store ones are unflattering or too haggard to really be worth it. This Pixie Lott piece (€58) jumped out at me, and is lightweight enough to wear during the day or on a night out.

One of my favourite finds of the day was this stunning metallic polka dot demi pleated skirt by J. Crew. It was only €26, which for something that probably originally cost at least €50 is a great deal. I’m really looking forward to wearing this with a black tank top and flat leather booties.

5. Om Diva

The last shop of the day was located about 10 minutes’ walk away, in the George’s Street Arcade. Amazingly, I’ve never stepped foot in this indoor market, despite it being right in the middle of one of my favourite areas of town. Om Diva is a small vintage basement with a sort of 50s Tiki holiday vibe to it. Pastels, sleeveless dresses and  floral prints galore.

The shop was beautifully decorated with retro lamps, vintage photos and even some plastic flamingos! I tried on a couple of printed dresses but as with Lucy’s Lounge, the aesthetic was not really my style, and so the prices were too high to buy what I didn’t adore.

I may have left this last place with nothing, but by no means did I go home empty handed. In total, 3 coats (o hai Irish summer!), 3 dresses, 2 tops, a cardigan and a skirt, all for less than €300. As it turns out, Dublin does have a great vintage scene, and a very eclectic one at that. This was just a handful of the city’s treasure troves, and after the success I had today, I’m sure I’ll be back soon enough to explore the rest!

Media Monday: Austin’s Stitch Lab

Stitch Lab is in my neck of the woods and so I’ve driven by it quite often.  It wasn’t until a friend convinced me to take a sewing class there that I actually stopped by.  Nestled away on South First, this quaint, converted house is equal parts whimsical fabric boutique and serious sewing classroom.

I enrolled in the Beginning I Sewing Series whereby our small class of four students was to learn how to make 1) a small drawstring bag, 2) a pillow and 3) our choice of a more advanced pillow, a purse or a skirt.  Our instructor Becky, armed with the patience of a saint, guided us all to sewing success over the course of three weekly classes, each 3.5 hours in duration.

In class one, we learned about the most important parts and functions of the sewing machine and created a drawstring bag, which is perfects for storing all kinds of little things, even doggie treats.  In class two, we made a square 16” pillow with piping and a zipper in the back.  Trust me, it was a boost to my confidence as a budding seamstress.  And then in class three, we all chose to make purses, because you know, that’s what fashionistas do!

Stitch Lab offers a variety of classes at different times of the day and week.  The Beginning I Sewing Series was only $140 and you can rent a machine for a mere $5!  When’s the last time you got 10.5 hours of classroom instruction for $145??  I betcha NEVER!  I highly recommend taking a class here, whether it’s sewing, knitting or cross-stitch; they have a class for just about everything you’d want to make.

It’s funny how time can change your perspective.  My mother is a prolific seamstress but I was never interested in learning as a kid.  I found the noise of the sewing machine to be jarring, whereas my mother found it to be soothing.  I still don’t find the rhythmic cadence of the sewing machine relaxing, but I do find it extremely satisfying to finish an item that is both aesthetically pleasing and useful.  So thank you Stitch Lab!

Foodie Friday: Naked Mountain Winery in Virginia

Naked Mountain Winery

Dear Fashionistas,

I had the immense pleasure of visiting the Naked Mountain Winery in Virginia this past September.  Nestled into the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia’s wine country, this winery is the perfect place to entertain family and friends.  Once under the auspices of Bob and Phoebe Harper, the winery is now owned and operated by Randy and Meagan Morgan, a young couple with a deep devotion to the art of wine making.

Now, I admit I’m not much of a drinker (read: I can’t hold my liquor) but my in-laws were sweet enough to set up a double date for me and my sweetie at their favorite vineyard.  So I braced myself for the series of headaches and tummy aches I knew were sure to follow dinner.

The dinner included carrot ginger soup and duck confit, followed by dessert: a warm fig crostata with vanilla ice cream.  Every course was paired with a different wine, and I’m happy to say that the next day I felt perfectly fine (that’s how it goes with the highest-quality wines, so I’m told).

Pam Grier: Foxy Brown Visits Fort Worth

Recently, movie star Pam Grier visited Fort Worth to promote the ground breaking of the Pam Grier Community Garden, located at 3520 East Berry Street.  The Community Garden is the brainchild of Jim and Gloria Austin, founders of the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum.

“We feel very fortunate to have been able to share our vision with Ms. Grier and partnering with her on our mutual vision of empowering the youth in the community by teaching them the benefits of healthy eating and providing a hands-on experience that will teach them how to take control of their own health and wellness when it comes to food and nutrition,” said museum Executive Director Gloria Austin.

I snapped these photos at Ms. Grier’s booksigning at The Dock Bookshop in East Fort Worth.  Ms. Grier, eloquently and passionately, spoke about the importance of community, education, health and hope.  Fittingly, the Pam Grier Community Garden, even in the beginning stages of construction,  already embodies these goals.

Fort Worth’s Best Brunch-Summer 2011

Dear Fashionistas,

I’d have to say that one of my main passions in life is The Arts.  Specifically, Fashion, Home Décor and the Culinary Arts.  Obviously, today’s post fits into the last category, and all three restaurants featured today are great places for the fashion-friendly to see and be seen.  Now I may be a serious Fashionista, but I’m an even more serious Foodie.  Therefore, I’m more forgiving about fashion faux pas (it’s all in good fun) but when it comes to food, I don’t play around!  I LOVE breakfast foods, and could enjoy them anytime of the day.  What’s better than breakfast for dinner?  I am constantly looking for the best brunch spots, wherever I am: California, Texas, Washington, D.C.- it doesn’t matter.  Today, though, I’m focusing on Fort Worth, Texas, and three restaurants: 1) Café Modern, 2) Taverna and 3) Café Brazil.  Here’s how they stack up.

Café Modern

Highly recommended by an artist friend of mine, and I had high expectations for Café Modern, located inside the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.  I skimmed the menu online and immediately spotted the Eggs Benedict with Crab- done.  However, when I arrived at the restaurant, that particular item was not on the menu (the online menu needed to be updated).  Disappointed but still optimistic, I ordered the Modern Benedict and my guest ordered the Pancakes

I found the Modern Benedict to be good, but not great.  Traditional with smoked ham, I prefer the more delicate crab in lieu of cumbersome ham slices.  The Lemony Hollandaise was nice, but it wasn’t the best citrus hollandaise I’d ever had.  The Fingerling Home Fries were nothing special.  Again, a good meal, but somehow the flavors just didn’t come together for me.  The Pancakes were rather good.  I’m not a fan of chocolate on pancakes and have never ordered them with chocolate chips, but I was pleasantly surprised how well the strawberries and Callebaut chocolate sauce complemented the light, spongy,  generous pancakes.  Overall, an extraordinary place to have an ordinary brunch.  Café Modern= C+

 Taverna

I’ve been going to Taverna for years, and I order the same thing each time, the Classic Eggs Benedict with Crab.  My other favorite item is the Vanilla French Toast.  Hmm, where do I start…the English muffins are always fresh and toasted to a crispy-chewy perfection.  The crab and poached eggs are an ideal duo but the Hollandaise is the star.  A skillful balance of egg yolk, butter and salt, the Hollandaise is plain and just plain delicious.  Often you find patrons scraping the plate in an attempt to leave none of this rich, buttery sauce behind.  The Breakfast Potatoes are a great companion to (and a great way to finish off ) the Hollandaise.

As for the French toast, again Taverna achieves an effortless balance of simple flavors- the result- an empty plate.  Fresh, thick slices of bread with a whisper of vanilla are served with a dollop of Mascarpone cheese, rather than the usual staid butter, and a side of mixed fruit.  Finally, I think what makes Taverna special, besides the food, is the atmosphere and dedicated staff.  Fun, friendly and fashionable, Taverna Fort Worth has never disappointed.  (Taverna Austin take note- your Eggs Benedict, Breakfast Potatoes and Vanilla French Toast fall short.)  Taverna Fort Worth= A-

Café Brazil

First, let me say I’ve been going to Café Brazil before either Café Modern or Taverna entered the picture.  Both Dallas locations are great.  Café Brazil is a great after-hours hang out once the clubs have closed.  It’s not unusual to have a line out the door and into the parking lot at 2AM.

I was ecstatic to discover a Fort Worth locale just across the street from TCU.  But whatever magic lives at the Dallas locations, it didn’t survive the move west.  To change things up, I ordered an Iced Chai Tea and French toast.  The eggs, bacon and chai were ok, but the French toast was thoroughly disappointing.  I suppose the profusion of cinnamon was meant to over-compensate for the stale bread, but there was nothing that could save this plate of mediocrity.  I hope that as time goes on, the Fort Worth Café Brazil will live up to the fond memories I have of the Dallas locations.  Café Brazil Fort Worth= D

Patriotic Fashion: July 4, 2011

There are some looks that just stay with you forever.  They are iconic, memorable and meaningful, and engrain themselves in your satorial psyche.  For me, the American Flag’s prominence in fashion has been with me since childhood and I’ve found my #1 favorite look featuring the flag, followed by a less literal, but just as memorable piece.

It’s summer so what’s more apropros than the American Flag bikini?  So many celebs have sported one version or another of this stylish, simple and straight-forward interpretation of American freedom.  I’m not sure where, or on whom, I first saw this design, but I’ve thought that it was so cute since I was a teen.  You can find many versions of this in mono-kini’s and one-pieces as well.

I absolutedly love this dress on actress Zoe Saldana.  Somewhat literal with the stripe detail, but stopping short of the stars on blue motif, this Armani evening gown still references the American flag in a bold but elegant manner.  Zoe kept her jewelry to a minimum, as the dress itself makes enough of a statement.

Take today to show off your patriotic style- Happy 4th of July!

Nik
