Mother’s Day 2012 Gift Guide: Guest Post by CrazyBabyTalk

Dear Fashionistas,

Mother’s Day is coming up and I wanted to do a lovely gift guide for you.  Being that my only child is the four-legged furry kind, I asked my friend and fellow blogger, Char (mother of two, founder of inspirational mommy resource blog CrazyBabyTalk), to create a Mother’s Day gift guide any mom would love.

Without further adieu, Char’s Mother’s Day Gift Guide:

“Today I asked my husband what comes to mind when he thinks of Mother’s Day.  His quick-thinking response was flowers; the standard go-to gift for beloved mothers on their special day.  Ever since my first Mother’s Day a few short years ago, my husband has brought both me, and his mother, beautiful bouquets.

Not being just a standard kind of husband though, he also ‘surprises’ me with a sweet sentiment of how much it means to him to have me as the mother of his children.  Last year it came in a little blue box and was handed to me by my toddling first born.  Pregnant with our second son, I already knew I would find inside the box a tiny key representing the newest addition-to-be.  The year before I had also received a little blue box and it contained a chain necklace adorned with one large key representing ‘us,’ adjacent to a tiny key symbolic of our one and only babe.

I cherish these keys because they represent something truly special between my husband and me.  What makes them so special is not that they came in a little blue box but because he put thought into selecting a gift with meaning; and a gift with meaning will make any mother smile – regardless of the price tag.

Because every mother is unique, I thought I would share with you a list of several gift ideas to help inspire you in your purchase of a thoughtful gift for the mothers in your life.”

Media Monday: Tumblr Embraces Advertising

Dear Fashionistas,

Crissie Fuller at online blogging bible IFB (Independent Fashion Blogger) reports that Tumblr will start selling advertising units on the “Featured” section of the dashboard as soon as May 2nd.  Two years ago, Tumblr CEO David Karp expressly stated his opposition to advertising on the platform.  However, the site’s rapid growth appears to have dictated a change in attitude.  Though I’m new to Tumblr, I’m not at all surprised by this announcement.  This is the nature of Business: grow, make money, rinse, repeat.

What do you think?  Is this Tumblr’s way of selling out or a smart move?

Foodie Friday: Shrimp & Grits- Ft. Worth’s Ferre vs. Austin’s South Congress Cafe

Dear Fashionistas,

When it comes to dining, I have a few items that I always have to try if they’re on the menu: 1) Eggs Benedict, 2) Chai Tea, 3) Crab Cakes and 4) Tempura Ice Cream.  God help me if they ever happen to show up on the same menu.  I’ve written about brunch in the past, and now I’d like to feature one of my favorite dishes offered for dinner: Shrimp and Grits.  An indisputable southern classic, and like most things, better with cheese.  Drum roll, please.

FERRE FORT WORTH

VS.

SOUTH CONGRESS CAFE

 And the winner is:

SOUTH CONGRESS CAFE

I admit, this was a close one.  Ferre is an exceptional establishment in downtown Fort Worth that consistently delivers great food and service.  However, what pushes South Congress Cafe over the edge is one component, the sweet and savory crawfish broth- it’s rich, yet light, and unbelievably good.  Heads up, this dish is a featured special, and not always offered.  When it shows up on the menu, I highly recommend trying it.  You won’t be disappointed.

My friend James and I have been hard at work setting up our online vintage store and hunting down the best vintage treasures to fill it with.  Here’s a sneak peek at one of my fave items we’ll have for sale: an awesome navy blue handbag with white beading.  I’m so in love this bag- I swear it goes with everything!

Foodie Friday: Malaga in Austin and Samar in Dallas

Fashionistas,

Here are two restaurants I love, Malaga Tapas & Bar in Austin and Samar by Stephan Pyles in Dallas. Both equally exotic and delicious, they’re perfect downtown hot spots to dine and shine in your most fashionable ensemble. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Samar, so the menu may have changed, but I’m sure whatever they’re serving is phenomenal.  Malaga favorite: breaded and fried goat cheese drizzled with honey.  It will change your life.  Samar favorite: Potatoes and chorizo with egg.  So good, it’s on the lunch and dinner menu.  Enjoy!

MALAGA TAPAS & BAR

Mexican Martini

Plato de Quesos y Fruta

Crab Stuffed Portabella (middle plate)- "Hongos Rellenos de Txangurro"

Mejillones en Salsa de Pimientos

SAMAR by STEPHAN PYLES

Potatoes and Chorizo with Organic Egg

I think this was fried calamari. It was paired with rice with squid ink and aioli. Delicious!

Spinach and Goat Cheese Naan (right)- Perfect addition to any meal.

Thread Thursday: Fashion Website “Your Next Ensemble” Has You Covered

Fashionistas,

I’ve been getting these updates in my Facebook news feed about  a website called “Your Next Shoes.”  The shoes were cute, so I took the bait and checked out the full site.  I’m so glad I did because it turns out that shoes are just the beginning!  Fashion website “Your Next Ensemble” is an umbrella site for other online fashion destinations such as “Your Next Handbag,” “Your Next Dress,” and even “Scarves and Wraps.”

Each sister site chronicles the latest in its respective fashion category, including celeb fashion, product reviews and where to buy.  Happy shopping!

Media Monday: Everlane- Quality Clothing that Won’t Break the Bank

Fashionistas,

From the beginning, Thread Conscious‘ motto has been “Never Pay Retail.  Always Look Fabulous.”  Well I’ve found a company after my own heart, Everlane, a new start-up “which produces designer-quality items at realistic prices,” according to a recent Business Insider article.

Everlane founder, Michael Preysman, knows all too well just how much luxury items are marked up- sometimes ten times more than what it actually cost to make the item.  Preysman thinks consumers are savvy enough to look for better deals, and Everlane provides just that: t-shirts on the online-only retailer’s site cost a mere $15.  Everlane also offers sweatshirts, ties and belts, and will soon expand to women’s clothing.  As soon as they do, I’ll be all over this website.

Beverly Hills Housewife Lisa Vanderpump Gets Her Own Reality Show

Fashionistas,

Sometimes I think I’m done with the Housewives and all their drama, but somehow, Mizz Cohen keeps drawing me back in.  Beverly Hills housewife Lisa “Pinky” Vanderpump is slated to star in and co-executive produce her own show with husband, Ken. Will I watch?  Sigh, probably.

What about you?  Anyone excited to see this spin-off?

Nik
