Behind the Seams: Austin Jewelry Designer Catherine Nicole

In our latest installment of Behind the Seams, we explore the career and creativity of Austin-based jewelry designer, Catherine Nicole.  I had the pleasure of meeting Catherine during Austin Fashion Week 2011 and I’ve been an admirer of her work ever since.  What makes Catherine’s company and jewelry so special is that $5 from every purchase supports her philanthropic efforts to prevent young girls from becoming child brides.  Catherine’s earthy, organic and feminine jewelry has been featured in major publications such as Entertainment Weekly, Good Housekeeping and Life & Style.

1. Tell us a little about your experience at the Parsons School of Design; when did you realize you were interested in design and why did you choose that particular school/career path?

I originally went to Parsons because I wanted to be a costume designer.  I liked the idea that you can tell a story about someone by the clothes you put her/him in.  I was born in New York and was spending my post-graduate years teaching in Spain when 9/11 happened.  I was ready to pursue my design work close to home, and Parsons turned out to be exactly the designer’s heaven that I hoped it would be.

2. You’re very well traveled; Spain, Africa, India…have you traveled since childhood or did your travels start during school?

I’ve traveled since childhood.  My mother grew up in Rome, and I have family all over the world. I’ve had wanderlust my whole life and as I got older, I found ways to travel to more exotic places.  I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to see the world and learn about different people and cultures. It’s a huge influence on my work.

3. What inspired you most about your travels?

In a lot of societies, the ornamentation of the people is more telling than the garments they wear.  The jewelry is obviously less utilitarian and often more expressive than the apparel.  That’s what inspired me to do statement jewelry.  I also love the textiles, colors, tiles and architecture that I’ve seen in my travels, and often draw inspiration from there.

4. Fashion and philanthropy make a great partnership; with all the risks inherent to starting a business, how can a business owner successfully manage a new business while supporting a worthy cause at the same time?

Well, I have the non-profit aspect built into the for-profit aspect.  In other words, I only donate from money that I make.  I used to support other projects, but was giving out more than a company of my size really could afford.  Now, I only give from what we earn.  $5 from every purchase is no small amount to us, but I didn’t want to collect such a small amount that I was barely helping anyone.

5. How did you come up with the concept for Chicks Against Child Brides?  Tell us a little about BRAC and how your initiative supports their mission.

I was moved to chills the first time I saw the original Girl Effect video and knew I wanted to get involved.  Since many of my customers are brides, it seemed a natural connection to take on the plight of the child bride.  BRAC is a UN-funded non-profit that focuses on micro-loans, and their Girl Centers really educate these kids about entrepreneurship, independence, and provide them a safe place to learn and get their businesses started.

Because I don’t have the kind of job that inherently gives back (like a doctor, counselor, teacher, etc..), it’s important to me that my company creates a way to benefit the world.  So this is not a temporary project for me, but rather a core component of the business that the company will always run on.

6. What is your most rewarding and most challenging experience as an entrepreneur and why?

Oftentimes being an entrepreneur is just as creative as being a designer.  This isn’t something I thought about when I started my business, and it’s one of my favorite aspects of it now.  As a small business, I rely on innovative ideas for my branding and marketing.  It’s a fun challenge that brings me closer to my customers and able to provide a more genuine product and service.

7. Looking back on your experiences in the fashion industry, what do you know now that you wish you’d known at the beginning of your journey?

I could have saved a lot of money if I knew then to think outside the box more, but I don’t know that I would have done anything differently.  By working the markets, runways, wholesale and PR circuit, I learned all the ins and outs of my industry.  I certainly do things differently now, but it’s only because I know from experience what doesn’t work for me about the mainstream route.

8. For anyone interested in pursuing a career in fashion design, what is the most important piece of advice you would give him or her?

Take an internship or internships.  I had to go through a lot of trial-and-error that I could have skipped over had I worked in other houses first.  And if you plan on starting your own line or store, be super frugal.  It’s easy to spend a lot of money at the beginning with the expectation that great things will happen from it.  But your business may have something else in store for you, and you have to gradually allow it to shape itself.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Catherine Nicole is a great example of a company with a heart and a conscience, not only focused on creating one-of-a-kind statement jewelry, but also focused on empowering women.  Whether you’re a bride, shopping for gifts or love the idea of giving back, Catherine Nicole has something uniquely beautiful for you.

Christmas 2012 Gift Guide, Sort Of

Dear Fashionistas,

I don’t know about you, but venturing out this year into the abyss that is holiday retail seems more daunting than ever.  Black Friday was a disaster, and though I really like brick and mortar shopping, I think embracing online shopping this year will prove just as satisfying.

So in thinking about the upcoming year, I wanted to create a gift guide

OK, I have to come clean.  For weeks, I’ve been trying to come up with a holiday gift guide, but I gots nothin’.  Nada, zip.  I even reached out to friends for suggestions.  Perhaps it’s a bit of writer’s block, or perhaps it’s the realization that everyone and their mama is throwing up gift guides all over the net.  What’s one less gift guide this year?

I mean, there’s the usual hat, scarf or tie for the guy or girl in your life, or for your spirited friends, there’s always a gift set for him or her.  For the foodie friend, you could always make reservations at their favorite restaurant, or better yet, have the food come to them.

If you’re looking for vintage things, I’ve got you covered- after all, it is cold outside nowSubscription services are great for folks who like gifts that keep on giving, month after month.  And finally, for the loved one who has everything, why not donate to their favorite charity on their behalf?  Yes, who needs another overly-involved-glitzy-kitschy gift guide?

Nik

Louboutin vs. YSL: The Red Sole Drama is Over

Dear Fashionistas,

I’m thrilled to have served as a facilitator this past week for an Intellectual Property Roundtable discussion at the Tower Club in Dallas regarding the recent case Louboutin vs. YSL.  You may remember I previously posted about this lawsuit wherein Christian Louboutin sued fashion house Yves Saint Laurent over over YSL’s red-soled shoes.  Louboutin claimed that YSL’s use of an outer red sole on its shoes infringed Louboutin’s trademark rights.

The U.S. District Court held that a single color couldn’t serve as a trademark because it would be unfair to prevent other designers from being able to use the color red, and therefore, YSL could keep selling its red-soled shoes.  This didn’t sit well with Louboutin so it appealed to a higher court.  The federal Court of Appeals disagreed with the District Court on some things, but affirmed some other points.

For example:

The Court of Appeals decided that a single color could actually serve as a trademark, and that Louboutin’s red outer sole was a protected trademark.

However, the Court of Appeals held that Louboutin had trademark protection over the red outer sole only so long as the upper part of the shoe is a different color.  In other words, Louboutin could have trademark rights where a black shoe had a red outer sole, but not for a red shoe with a red outer sole.

So Louboutin now has on record by a Court of Appeals that its red outer sole is indeed a protected trademark, and YSL can keep selling its red shoes with the red outer soles.  Seems to be a win-win situation, though I’m not so sure.

But as I’ve mentioned before, trademark law is about preventing consumer confusion.

What do you all think?

1) If you were shopping for Louboutin heels, would you confuse these red-soled YSL heels as Louboutins?

2) Upon seeing a red sole, would you pick up the YSL heels expecting to see “Louboutin” scrawled on the insole?

3) Finally, once you saw that the shoes were actually made by YSL, would you A) still buy them or B) continue looking for Louboutins?  In either case, why?  Please leave a comment; I would love to hear from you!

One more thing:  I saw on TV this morning a product called “Shoe Flavors.”  Basically, it’s a kit that enables you to embellish your shoes with crystals and even paint the outer sole a different color, including white, sparkle silver, and yes, red.  The website boasts:

With Shoe Flavors you can create shoes unique to your style that no one in the world can own! Stop searching for that perfect pair of shoes – start making the shoes that are perfect for you! The Shoe Flavors Designer Kit® contains EVERYTHING you need to revamp your shoes’ style so they’re runway ready.”

Interesting.

Thanksgiving Rainbow : )

Dear Fashionistas,

Each year, I’m grateful to be able to spend time with family and share laughter, love and a good meal with them.  This year, I tested out my skills in the kitchen, making three dishes: traditional dressing, seafood dressing and deviled eggs.  I’m happy to report that all three were a success.

I hope you had a safe and Happy Thanksgiving and I hope that the rest of your year is filled with joy, peace and fabulous holiday fashion.

Washington D.C. Recap: H&M, Ritz Carlton and More

Dear Fashionistas,

Since returning from D.C., it’s been a whirlwind getting ready for Thanksgiving.  Now that Thanksgiving is over, I wanted to briefly recap my D.C. trip in photos.  Thanksgiving post is forthcoming!

First, though I was right across the street from H&M, I never made it over there to check out the Maison Martin Margiela collection.  I know.  Tragic.  But I’m hoping to check it out soon, now that I’m back in Texas.  Second, I love sushi, and the Alexandria/D.C. area is a great place to try it out.  I recommend MoMo Sushi, nestled away on Queen Street- what it lacks in square footage it more than makes up for in flavor and service.  Third, I attended a Masquerade Ball at the Ritz Carlton.  Thank God my dress was not super-fitted because I sampled way too many desserts!  Plus I had to wear a regular slip because I have somehow misplaced my Spanx.  How does one lose such an item?  I have no idea, but somehow my closet ate it and I can’t find it anywhere!  Annnd moving on from dessert to brunch- I make it a point to try different versions of Eggs Benedict, even if it’s just traditional with ham.  The version I had here was made with proscuitto- deliciousFinally, I’m also obsessessed with architecture and have included photos of one of the most beautiful ceilings I’ve ever seen.  I hope you enjoy and that you’ve had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Fini.

Nik
