Breaking News: Pre-teen Grant Mower to Design Dress for Michelle Obama

Dear Fashionistas,

It has come to my attention that fellow Texan Grant Mower is designing a dress for First Lady, Michelle Obama.  Mentored by Designer Michael Faircloth (great name, by the way), Mower traveled to Utah, hoping to schedule a fitting with Mrs. O.  That fateful fitting, was supposed to take place yesterday, July 26th.

Mower won the Terry Costa design competition this past October and has plans to become a haute couturier.  I stated at the time of that post that I hoped the sky was the limit for him.  With Mrs. Obama in his corner, it looks like Mower’s flying high.

Congrats, Grant.  Texans, show your support!

Media Monday: Fashion Tech Mash Ups

Hello Fashionistas,

I’m wrapping up a week-long birthday celebration, but I wanted to take a breather to let you in on some very interesting fashion/tech news.  Here goes:

1.  Starting TODAY (7/25/11), Gilt Groupe, Banana Republic and Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant  offer you a collection of vintage-inspired pieces that even Don Draper would approve of.  See the capsule collection here.

2.  What’s in a name?  That which we call Avelle is now called Bag Borrow or Steal, again.  BBOS catapulted to fame in 2008′s Sex and the City movie, whose HBO series became the holy grail for aspiring fashionistas world-wide.   I never understood the name change (even after pouring over BBOS’s SEC filings for a graduate school paper- yes, I’m a nerd), but I’m glad Bag Borrow or Steal is back.

3.  Rent the Runway has now partnered with ShopStyle, offering a one-stop shopping experience for women who like to try before buying.  “This partnership expands on this vision by allowing us to give women greater access to designer dresses and the flexibility to rent v. buy depending on her fashion needs,” explained Melissa Davis, VP of ShopStyle, US.  I’ve always been a fan of options, especially designer ones.

Austin Eats & Antiques: Restaurant Round-Up & the City-Wide Garage Sale

Dear Fashionistas & Foodies,

Mid-July is fast approaching and there are two special events worth mentioning.

1. The City-Wide Garage Sale:  July 16-17, Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road

$5 gets you in the door and exhibits include estate jewelry, vintage clothing and of course, antiques.  CWGS, you had me at estate jewelry.  The website also boasts that it’s “Austin’s largest antique, collectible & vintage marketplace.”  We shall see, come July 16th.

 2. The GO TEXAN Restaurant Round-Up: July 25-31.

This dining experience is a great way to support local restauranteurs, farmers and food banks!  Many restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds to a local food bank when you dine with them during July 25-31.  You can also sign up for Texas-sized prizes here.

Fort Worth’s Best Brunch-Summer 2011

Dear Fashionistas,

I’d have to say that one of my main passions in life is The Arts.  Specifically, Fashion, Home Décor and the Culinary Arts.  Obviously, today’s post fits into the last category, and all three restaurants featured today are great places for the fashion-friendly to see and be seen.  Now I may be a serious Fashionista, but I’m an even more serious Foodie.  Therefore, I’m more forgiving about fashion faux pas (it’s all in good fun) but when it comes to food, I don’t play around!  I LOVE breakfast foods, and could enjoy them anytime of the day.  What’s better than breakfast for dinner?  I am constantly looking for the best brunch spots, wherever I am: California, Texas, Washington, D.C.- it doesn’t matter.  Today, though, I’m focusing on Fort Worth, Texas, and three restaurants: 1) Café Modern, 2) Taverna and 3) Café Brazil.  Here’s how they stack up.

Café Modern

Highly recommended by an artist friend of mine, and I had high expectations for Café Modern, located inside the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.  I skimmed the menu online and immediately spotted the Eggs Benedict with Crab- done.  However, when I arrived at the restaurant, that particular item was not on the menu (the online menu needed to be updated).  Disappointed but still optimistic, I ordered the Modern Benedict and my guest ordered the Pancakes

I found the Modern Benedict to be good, but not great.  Traditional with smoked ham, I prefer the more delicate crab in lieu of cumbersome ham slices.  The Lemony Hollandaise was nice, but it wasn’t the best citrus hollandaise I’d ever had.  The Fingerling Home Fries were nothing special.  Again, a good meal, but somehow the flavors just didn’t come together for me.  The Pancakes were rather good.  I’m not a fan of chocolate on pancakes and have never ordered them with chocolate chips, but I was pleasantly surprised how well the strawberries and Callebaut chocolate sauce complemented the light, spongy,  generous pancakes.  Overall, an extraordinary place to have an ordinary brunch.  Café Modern= C+

 Taverna

I’ve been going to Taverna for years, and I order the same thing each time, the Classic Eggs Benedict with Crab.  My other favorite item is the Vanilla French Toast.  Hmm, where do I start…the English muffins are always fresh and toasted to a crispy-chewy perfection.  The crab and poached eggs are an ideal duo but the Hollandaise is the star.  A skillful balance of egg yolk, butter and salt, the Hollandaise is plain and just plain delicious.  Often you find patrons scraping the plate in an attempt to leave none of this rich, buttery sauce behind.  The Breakfast Potatoes are a great companion to (and a great way to finish off ) the Hollandaise.

As for the French toast, again Taverna achieves an effortless balance of simple flavors- the result- an empty plate.  Fresh, thick slices of bread with a whisper of vanilla are served with a dollop of Mascarpone cheese, rather than the usual staid butter, and a side of mixed fruit.  Finally, I think what makes Taverna special, besides the food, is the atmosphere and dedicated staff.  Fun, friendly and fashionable, Taverna Fort Worth has never disappointed.  (Taverna Austin take note- your Eggs Benedict, Breakfast Potatoes and Vanilla French Toast fall short.)  Taverna Fort Worth= A-

Café Brazil

First, let me say I’ve been going to Café Brazil before either Café Modern or Taverna entered the picture.  Both Dallas locations are great.  Café Brazil is a great after-hours hang out once the clubs have closed.  It’s not unusual to have a line out the door and into the parking lot at 2AM.

I was ecstatic to discover a Fort Worth locale just across the street from TCU.  But whatever magic lives at the Dallas locations, it didn’t survive the move west.  To change things up, I ordered an Iced Chai Tea and French toast.  The eggs, bacon and chai were ok, but the French toast was thoroughly disappointing.  I suppose the profusion of cinnamon was meant to over-compensate for the stale bread, but there was nothing that could save this plate of mediocrity.  I hope that as time goes on, the Fort Worth Café Brazil will live up to the fond memories I have of the Dallas locations.  Café Brazil Fort Worth= D

Austin Street Fashion: Color-blocking for Men

Fashionistas,

This is Eric.  Doesn’t he look smart?  When I saw his ensemble, I thought “what a perfect example of color-blocking for men!”  This look is chic, subtle, effortless and has “Austin-cool” written all over it.  The palette of blue, purple and coral with anchors of brown in the tortoise shell glasses and shoes is seriously fashionable, while maintaining a thoughtful playfulness.  Well done Eric!

Gilt Takes Flight and Huffington Honors Silicon Valley Fashionistas

Just wanted to share a quick bit of fashion news:

1. Market Watch reports that Gilt Groupe has partnered with Air Advertainment to provide Gilt-branded snack boxes aboard US Airways.  As you probably know, Gilt has expanded its offerings beyond sartorial fare to include deals on luxury travel and food.  And now, I suppose that means food in flight as well!

2.  The Huffington Post will honor Silicon Valley Fashionistas Susan Lyne (Gilt Groupe Chairwoman) and Jennifer Hyman (Rent the Runway CEO) in its new series “Women in Tech.”  This series will highlight top leaders in the Tech Sector with the hope of encouraging other women to pursue careers in the technology industry.

Patriotic Fashion: July 4, 2011

There are some looks that just stay with you forever.  They are iconic, memorable and meaningful, and engrain themselves in your satorial psyche.  For me, the American Flag’s prominence in fashion has been with me since childhood and I’ve found my #1 favorite look featuring the flag, followed by a less literal, but just as memorable piece.

It’s summer so what’s more apropros than the American Flag bikini?  So many celebs have sported one version or another of this stylish, simple and straight-forward interpretation of American freedom.  I’m not sure where, or on whom, I first saw this design, but I’ve thought that it was so cute since I was a teen.  You can find many versions of this in mono-kini’s and one-pieces as well.

I absolutedly love this dress on actress Zoe Saldana.  Somewhat literal with the stripe detail, but stopping short of the stars on blue motif, this Armani evening gown still references the American flag in a bold but elegant manner.  Zoe kept her jewelry to a minimum, as the dress itself makes enough of a statement.

Take today to show off your patriotic style- Happy 4th of July!
