Cristobal Balenciaga at de Young Museum in San Francisco

This weekend proved inspiring…and exhausting.  I boarded Caltrain at 11:30am on Saturday and didn’t return home until a little after 8pm!  The excursion was well worth the time spent, as the de Young Museum is currently hosting an exhibit of Cristóbal Balenciaga’s greatest creations, curated by Hamish Bowles, no less.

As Balenciaga and Spain was a special exhibit, no photography was allowed.  Despite this customary practice, such a display of technical prowess and marked ingenuity won’t soon be forgotten.   As patrons wound their way through elaborate evening dresses, bold coats and cheeky little hats, each moment was pleasantly punctuated by whispered adorations, reverent silence and gasps of delight.  Unbeknownst to me, even Madame Chanel recognized Balenciaga’s talent and influence, deeming him “the only couturier.”

If you’ll be in the Bay Area soon, I do recommend stopping by de Young.  The Balenciaga exhibit ends July 4, 2011.  Also I must mention that the Legion of Honor Museum is currently exhibiting “Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle Borchgrave” through June 5, 2011.  Ms. Borchgrave is renowned for her elaborate “couture” costumes- constructed entirely of paper!  Reminiscent of  Borchgrave’s work are these paper cut wigs I saw on the Neotraditionalist blog last month.  An incredible feat within themselves, the wigs are no match for Borchgrave’s ensembles!

I ended the evening with a dinner of samosas and palak paneer at Masala Indian Cuisine on 9th Street, and boarded the Caltrain, tired and happy, for my return home.

In closing, I hope you had a wonderful Easter holiday; I know I did.  Stanford Memorial Church was a lovely sight on Sunday morning, which I promptly followed up with brunch and a long nap.

Nik

Reminder: H&M Northpark to close April 2011

First, just a quick reminder that the temporary H&M store at Northpark is supposed to close this month in preparation for opening the permanent store in the mall in late Fall 2011.  Check out my coverage of H&M in Dallas and on the East Coast.

Second, after a bit of thought, I have decided to put my Facebook and Twitter pages on a hiatus, as I don’t use them as often as I would like.  I’ll be sure to let you know when I decide to fire them up again.

On that note, do continue to check back here for all things fashionable and subscribe to get updates in your inbox.  Be sure to confirm your subscription once you receive this email: “Activate your email subscription to: Thread Conscious.”  Just click on the link provided in the email to activate your subscription.

More to come from my travels in California…(can you say Balenciaga?)

Earth Day: Natural Beauty

Alright.  I’ll confess.  I had these grand plans to have a special Earth Day post ready for today.  Alas, there are but 24 hours in a day and over half of my day was spent working on other projects and running in and out of meetings.  So- no grand post- but I will leave you with two pictures in honor of Earth Day.

Ridiculous gas prices are a trend that makes me frown…

But these wooden shades are a trend that makes me smile.

Vintage Stunners: Statements from the Past

Dear Fashionistas,

Over the past year and a half of traveling and writing this blog, I’ve met a lot of interesting people and seen a lot of good vintage jewelry.  Looking back, there are a few memorable pieces that I felt compelled to highlight. Interestingly enough, I spotted them all in Texas.  Some you’ve seen in past posts, and the rest are new additions, including a rare Rolex watch. Enjoy.

North Park Center at Night

I was combing through random photos and came upon these I took of Northpark Center in Dallas.  It’s one thing to see a high-end mall in all its glory during the day, but by night, it’s quite different.  Immensely calm and yet intensely engaging, Northpark loses none of its appeal at nightfall.  Once the sun goes down and the crowds clear out at closing time, Northpark effortlessly slips into the role of museum.

Ivanka Trump to Appear at Bachendorf’s in Dallas

Confession: Initially this post was to be about Ivanka’s (pronounced ee-Vahn-ka) appearance at Bachendorf’s in Dallas, but research uncovered that Ms. Trump has been very busy, not only managing Trump Hotel’s international expansion and her eponymous jewelry line, but she has also launched a line of handbags and footwear.

A quick glance at the lines reveal reasonably priced (i.e. $130-$150) items, all calculated to appeal to a wide audience, and therefore nothing too over-the-top.  I do particularly like the Crystal Satchel in black (retail: $150).  Undoubtedly the shoes and bags were intentionally designed to complement Ivanka’s jewelry line but never rival it (an impossible feat, I’m sure).

As a long-time admirer of Ivanka’s style, I included a blurb about her jewelry in my Christmas 2010 Shopping Guide for Women and Men.  I really like her signature oval design for its elegance and simplicity.  If you like a little more bling, and by a little I mean a lot, then check out the tassel necklaces.  If you’d like to see the Ivanka Trump Jewelry Collection, (and well Ivanka) in person, I read in this month’s D Magazine that Bachendorf’s will host them both on April 21st, 6-8pm at The Plaza at Preston Center located at 8400 Preston Road, Dallas 75225.

If you are unable to attend the event, but still wish to see Ms. Trump, you can always watch her weekly video updates, Inside Scoop from Ivanka” via her Facebook page.
