Thread Thursday: By George in Downtown Austin

I love the spontaneity of Austin.  You just never know what you’re gonna get- like a side of fashion with your breakfast!  A friend and I went to brunch at 24 Diner  located at the corner of 6th and Lamar Street.  I ordered the French Toast Platter with homemade veggie sausage …Oh.  My.  Gaw!  It was so good…I couldn’t stop myself…and I ate the whole damn thing.

Anyhoo, moving on from my lack of self control, our waitress Allison was sporting some fancy artsy smartsy earrings. Turns out she got these beauties from Diablo Rojo Tattoo Studio . See, fashion is everywhere!

After brunch, we headed across the street to By George  and I was reminded of exactly why I love accessories in general, and jewelry specifically.  (Why does it have to be so expensive though?  Sigh.)  We started on the men’s side, which had some really nice button up shirts (I think I saw John Varvatos), ties and premium denim.

Items that weren’t even on my radar were the candles and cologne.  Tres nice.  Ladies, listen to me.  If you like candles/perfume/etc., but have tired of all the overly sweet, predictably fruity scents, saunter on over to the men’s section and check out their  candles and cologne.  Subtle, surprising and just as intoxicating, you’ll be pleased when you find something that suits you

Having said that, I found the Odin EDT 04 Petrana  (Retail: $110) to be an interesting mix of exotic scents- just take a look at the description:

“Transported to a Jordanian desert landscape covered in blooming black Iris comes a floral scent that reveals its dark complexion from earth to air. The heart of Petrana emerges from a foundation of wild orris root and green violet leaf absolute. Herbaceous coriander, spicy pink pepper and deep purple cassis float above the blooms infusing luminous freshness.”

It may read like it’s ripped from the pages of a torrid romance novel, but we could all use a little romance, right?!

On the women’s side, there was plenty of Givenchy, jewelry, etc. to feast my eyes on.

I was immediately drawn to the jewelry cases which displayed some very unusual and very beautiful pieces.  One designer in particular caught my eye.  Fashionista, prepare thyself.

Ok, no, let me prepare you for this one.  Renee Lewis Fine Jewelry is in the 4 to 5 figure range.  Yes.  Imma spell it out.  F-i-v-e.  Five figures.  You’ll see why.  Keep reading.

Reminiscent of one of my favorite Dallas brands, Three Bishops, Renee also incorporates loose jewels into her unique “shakes” pendant designs (pictured above).  The result, an alluring, erratic mingling of precious gems, is both unexpected and irresistible.  Further, one must be comfortable with change to wear Renee’s pieces, as the unchoreographed dance of diamonds is incapable of repetition.  Each shake of the pendent produces a delicious sound that only liberated diamonds could make and a new variation of what was before.  “New” pieces are assembled from old Edwardian, Victorian or Georgian designs, culminating in one-of-a-kind statement jewelry that is always one to four centuries old.  While playful in spirit, these pieces carry grown up price tags, ranging from $6,000-$30,000.  You can find Renee Lewis Fine Jewelry at Barneys New York

San Francisco, Japantown & Keanu Reeves (Sort Of)

I’m making the most of my West Coast visit and this past weekend I met a friend at the Japan Center Mall in San Francisco’s Japantown.  We had sushi for lunch at Mifune and then promptly made our way through the mall looking for souvenirs.  We stopped by an adorable gift shop called Nippon-Ya and my friend picked up a few gifts for family members.  The highlight of this outing, however, was 1) discovering that Keanu Reeves had dined at Fuku Sushi in this mall (I know, random- but I’m a huge fan) and 2) perusing the Kinokuniya Bookstore for my favorite Japanese fashion magazine, Baila.  Enjoy the pictures!

UPDATE: GW Boutique 2011

I first wrote about GW Boutique in Keller, TX on March 24, 2010, and since then that post has been one of my most heavily visited.  At a year later, I thought it was high time I revisit what makes GW Boutique so fantastic, and give you an update on its newest additions.

Philanthropy (The Cake):

While I often write about fabulous items you can acquire, please remember it’s just as fabulous to give to others.  Goodwill Industries International, Inc. is an institution of giving that funds community programs, including job placement and job training, by selling donated clothing.  Donations do more than supplement a fellow fashionista’s wardrobe:

“Every 45 seconds of every business day, a person served by Goodwill earns a good job.”

And you thought you were just buying a blouse…

Recycling (The Icing):

Besides helping folks find jobs, donating or buying at GW Boutique means you’re practicing green living.  Yes, fashion and recycling go hand in hand- and it’s a beautiful collaboration.  Ever heard of vintage?

New Arrivals (The Cherry on Top):

I spoke with Kristen in Goodwill’s PR department, and she had some wonderful things to share.

You’ll remember from my original post there was only one dressing room, making for one long waiting line.  Thankfully, GW Boutique has added another dressing room.  I visited a couple of months ago and there was no line and thus, no waiting.

Interestingly, GW Boutique has diversified its offerings and works with buyers to bring in brand new items in addition to donated ones.  On my visit I found an entire wall covered with new fashion-forward accessories.

Occasionally, the store plans to have sales on certain merchandise, such as items from White House Black Market and Banana Republic

You’re invited to sign up for email updates here or while shopping in the store and you can find GW Boutique coupons on its Facebook and Twitter pages.  Also feel free to share with the store any feedback you have.

Exclusive to Keller residents:  Look for the occasional 25%-30% Off Coupon in the Keller Citizen Newspaper. (Lucky you!)

Please excuse the cake references…I gave up desserts for Lent and I’m going through withdrawals.

 Nik

Austin Before SXSW: The Quiet Before the Storm

As you all know, I’ve been traveling a bit and though I love DFW, Austin holds a special place in my heart.  The capitol of my beloved State, a cultural and artistic epicenter…Austin feels new and familiar all at once.  Austin feels like home.

As the City swelled with visitors for SXSW, I had a fleeting pang of regret that I would not be attending this year.  I was comforted by the fact that festivals aren’t what keep me coming back; it’s my good friends, good food and good fashion.  It is the intangible qualities that inspire folks to wear those “Keep Austin Weird” t-shirts.  I suppose what I like most about Austin, besides the friendships I have there, is the Spirit of the City, how it lives and breathes.  Yes, I definitely feel Austin has a Heart, and a Soul.

March 2011 Events: Nordstrom Rack Opening Soon and Much More!

Ok, I don’t know about you, but it seems that lately the DFW shopping scene has been slow!  I am style starved!  But alas, folks have slowly been reaching out to me to let me know about their upcoming events.  (Huge thanks to the jewelry designers and boutiques that keep me informed!)

Here’s the line up so far: Nordstrom Rack Opening Mar. 17, Fashion Cited Charity Event Mar. 24, The Dallas Flea Mar. 26, Glam Shop Girls Mar. 30 and the Dallas International Film Festival Mar. 31-Apr. 10.

1. Nordstrom Rack opens this Thursday, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day) at the Parks at Arlington Mall.  I did a preview walk-through of the store recently and I can tell you that this store is bursting at the seams with designer goodies with your name on it.  The Rack has unbelievable discounts so you only pay a fraction of the retail price!

Men: Ben Sherman, Bugatchi, Burberry (galore!), Hugo Boss, Michael Kors, 7 For All Mankind (great selection of jean brands too),  and more.

Women: Juicy Couture, Burberry, Fendi, Michael Kors, Leifs Dottir, Kate Spade and much, much more.

Now, listen to Nik, I’m your friend and I want the very best shopping experience for you.  Are you ready for this?  GET THERE EARLY!  As in Thursday.   Before 8:30am.  Do not wait until the weekend.  There will be a Race Through the Rack Sweepstakes drawing on opening day that you won’t want to miss!  Click here for details.

Good luck!  (Not that you’ll need it on St. Patrick’s Day.)

2. Fashion Cited Charity Event Benefiting Legal Hospice.

3. The Dallas Flea is upon us once again, this time on Mar. 26th, 9am-4pm at 1409 S. Lamar Street.

Same formula, same fun: Only $5 bucks to get in and shop a huge selection of vendors with handmade, high-end, one-of-a-kind clothing, home decor and jewelry like these gorgeous finds from The Silver Importer:

The Dallas Flea- The Silver Importer

The Silver Importer- Statement Pearl Necklace

The Dallas Flea- The Silver Importer

4. Glam Shop Girls- I have never attended this but I think it’s similar to Shecky’s Girls Night Out, which I love.  Glam Shop Girls features chic shopping events in Dallas, Houston and San Francisco.  This event is held in the same building as The Dallas Flea.

GLAM SHOP GIRLS DALLAS

1409 S. Lamar #008

5. The Dallas International Film Festival ramps up on March 31st, so if you missed SXSW, here’s another chance to get your film fix.  I missed SXSW too, as I left Austin on the Friday the festival began…oh well, there’s always next year!  Tickets for the Dallas film festival go on sale on March 17th.

In sum, March gives fahionistas plenty of opportunities to sip, shop, save and do a good deed or two.  As always, if you attend these events please share your experiences here, in the comments or by emailing me at nik@threadconscious.com.

Who Will Replace Galliano at Dior?

Buenas Dias, Fashionistas!  I’m still running around Austin like a crazy person and I’m so pressed for time- I am literally blogging from my cell phone!  Speaking of crazies, I just read that Dior is allegedly seeking replacements for former creative director John Galliano.  Could it be *gasp* Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci???  Or perhaps Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz???  Dun dun DUUNNN!  The plot thickens.  Read more about these developments at the Los Angeles Times’ blog, All the Rage.

Architect Henry Ponce: The Master of Restoration and New Construction

I first saw Mr. Henry Ponce’s work on an episode of House Hunters International featuring Merida, Mexico.  I generally don’t like “modern” architecture but what he creates is exceptionally beautiful.  This award-winning architect is a native of Merida and has been at the forefront of the restoration movement sweeping through his native city.  Mr. Ponce is not only accomplished in the art of architectural restoration, but also new construction.  You can take a look at my very favorite Henry Ponce masterpiece below.  Grab yourself a margarita or mojito and relax for the next 3 minutes…I present to you, Casa 64.

Isn’t this a truly spectacular and quite literal “Dream House?”  Can you imagine all the stylish parties you could have there?!  Mr. Ponce, will you take clients in Texas? : )
