Thread Thursday: Shoe Gurus- ShoeDazzle & JustFabulous

Kim Kardashian, Kardashian shoes, Kardashian style

I wanted to take a peek at online retailers ShoeDazzle, of Kim Kardashian fame, and JustFabulous to see how the two shoe gurus sized up.  With the Kardashians’ $75 million dollars worth of legal troubles, I’ll bet Kimmy’s highly motivated to sell some shoes to cover her legal fees.

I found more similarities than differences between the two retailers, but decided to list the major features in a chart for your comparison.  Because I couldn’t make the formatting yield to my wishes, I have included a link below to the PDF.  And as always, if you like what you’re reading, you can subscribe to Thread Conscious via the subscription box in the upper right-hand corner and keep up via Facebook and Twitter.

Media Monday: The Fashion Nerds

Today’s post pays homage Harvard fashionistas and UT Dallas scientists, two groups who are very Thread Conscious in my opinion, and taking fashion in a new, intelligent direction.

Recently, Harvard Business School (HBU) has seen an influx of students with a serious eye for fashion, no doubt due to its alumni who have successfully started companies such as Gilt Groupe, Fashion Stake, Birchbox and Rent the Runway, to name a few.

About four months ago, Annie Karni of the New York Post’s Page Six reported on the chic new happenings at Harvard, including a visit by none other than Anna “She Who Must Be Obeyed” Wintour, in Spring 2010.  HBU even boasts a Luxury Goods & Design Business Club and a Retail and Apparel Club, proving that fashion is serious business.

A few days ago, David Zax of Fast Company reported that a group of UT Dallas scientists are harnessing “nano technology” that could lead to electric-powered apparel.  Yes, you read that correctly.  One day your shirt or jeans may be able to power your Blackberry or iPhone.  While I love the idea of that, in all its geeky glory, you shouldn’t get too excited just yet.  The research is ongoing and the concept novel.  Still, I get all giddy when high-tech meets high fashion.

For the super-nerdy types (like me), after you read the Fast Company article about UT Dallas’ nano-scientists, I have provided a snippet below of a patent application for a similar technology, co-invented by Ray Baugham, director of UT Dallas’ MacDiarmid NanoTech Institute.  See paragraph 0003 under “Field of the Invention.”

Thread Thursday: Moda Operandi- The Virtual Trunk Show

Darlings, I must begin this post with a disclaimer: one of the main goals of Thread Conscious is to report some of the best sales on designer clothing and accessories in DFW and online.  Another goal is to expose you to different aspects of the fashion industry, from interviews with independent boutique owners to fashion law.  Our motto is “Never Pay Retail, Always Look Fabulous.”  However, this is not a command, but more of a mantra, and how you spend your scratch is up to you.  That being said, this post is about how to get looks straight off the runway to your doorway: Introducing Moda Operandi.

Moda Operandi is an online, members-only shopping experience for the fashion-obsessed (i.e. folks with disposable income), set to launch in February 2011.  For those who hate to wait, you’ll be able to order looks straight from the runway from Vera Wang, Thakoon and other major fashion labels.  Founder, and former Gilt Noir employee, Ms. Aslaug Magnusdottir has collaborated with Vogue contributing editor Lauren Santo Domingo to give “women the power to choose from the full collection.”  No need to wait 6 months from the fashion show only to be disappointed by the abbreviated collection that finally makes it to retail stores.  Include a 50% deposit with your order, and secure your fashion fix now.  Read more about Moda Operandi here.

Dior Faces of Beauty Challenge & Home Accessories Designer Jonathan Adler

I wanted to share something that came across my desk and to also officially expand Thread Conscious’ scope to include home decor, my other Fashion Love.  Below you’ll find information about the Dior and Personal Care Products Council contest, which I hope you’ll find exciting, and I’d also like to introduce you to one of my favorite home decor designers, Jonathan Adler.

I’m not sure where I first discovered Jonathan Adler- could’ve been HGTV or Domino Magazine, but the man is pure talent.  While he does full scale interior design, I’m obsessed with his pottery.  These vivacious, smile-inducing curiosities are his signature, no doubt inspired by the beauty in nature, culture and even the human body.  I wonder how much of Adler’s art is inspired by husband Simon Doonan, the magnificent 20+ year creative director of Barneys?  Best of all, Jonathan Adler is having a sale right now!
