Cyber Monday, November 29, 2010

The Examiner reports a great list of Cyber Monday sales on Dealio.com, an online resource for deals whose goal is that you never have to pay retail again, for anything.  Sound familiar?  This is a site after my own heart!  Anyhoo, the Cyber Monday sales include retailers like Bebe, Eddie Bauer, Tory Burch and Bloomingdales, discounts ranging anywhere from 20-40% off for these specific stores.  Just search, click and save!

Thread Thursday: Get Ready for Black Friday 2010

Hey folks,

I’m out of town, again, this time for Thanksgiving, but I’ve been searching around for some great deals in DFW (and one in Houston) for you to take advantage of for Black Friday…here’s what I’ve found thus far:

D Magazine’s Shop Talk has compiled a great list of Black Friday sales that include clothing from surrounding shops, music from Good Records, treats from Pink Berry and spa treatments at the Ritz!

Pink Memo reports that Inwood Village will have several holiday sales at participating stores, including Rich Hippie, Last Call Studio by Neiman Marcus and Bag’n Baggage.

The Parks Mall in Arlington has an extensive list of stores participating in Black Friday, including Zales, New York & Co. and JC Penney.

NBC DFW reports a list of great sales, including one exclusively for Northpark Mall in Dallas.

Ok, now for Houston.  I scoped out the Galleria Mall yesterday and lo and behold, Barneys Co-op is going out of business (just the Houston location!).  There are items up to 60% off and I didn’t want to withhold the news in case you’re in Houston or planning to return to Houston soon.

Barneys Co-op Galleria I
5015 Westheimer, Suite A2420 Houston, TX 77056

Mon-Sat: 10am-9pm
Sun: 11am-7pm
T: 713.986.5113   |  F: 773.986.5121

So, that’s all I have for now- I smell the turkey and dressing, gotta go!  Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Shopping!

Designer Looks for Your Little One

What’s more adorable than baby clothes?  Nothing.  Well, ok, technically the baby  is most adorable, but you know what I mean.  This is a fashion blog, after all, but being sans child myself, I have not sought out designer looks for little ones…until now.  Recently, a friend of mine who runs her own baby blog, In The Babyhood, asked me to do a guest post about what designer clothes for children were out there and I took to the internet to find out.

Lavish Kids

Why I Like this Site:  When they say lavish, they mean it.  Armani, D&G, Burberry, Juicy Couture and more, Lavish Kids believes you should spare no expense and buy only the best when it comes to Baby.  While I’m a connoisseur of the couture, I know that most parents don’t want to foot the bill to keep jr. looking like a million bucks when he can’t even spell Dolce & Gabbana.  So, I went straight to the “Sale” section of the website.  Super cute, and still pricey, but every little bit helps!

Armani, Sale $45

Burberry, Sale $108

Haute Look

Why I Like this Site: This is one of those members-only sites, but rest assured, anyone can sign up and become a member.  Haute Look boasts truly reasonable sales- some items are as low as $4!  It carries high-quality, albeit lesser known brands like Angel Dear, but includes a link where you can read more about each brand and even watch a short promo video about the products.

Angel Dear Sale $14

Gilt Groupe

Gilt Groupe

Why I Like this Site: Gilt Groupe is another inclusive, exclusive members only online shopping experience.  I’ve been a fan of Gilt’s since it first came on the scene a few years ago.  Warning: Gilt does such a great job of selecting fashion-forward pieces that they sell out quickly.  This applies to the children’s clothing as well as adults.  So be diligent and be decisive or you’ll be sorry!

Juliet on Sale $35

Zulily

Ok, I don’t know much about this one because I don’t have an account.  According to the website, its exclusive focus is on “daily deals for babies and kids, up to 70% off.”  It was started by the guy who co-founded Blue Nile, an online retailer of jewelry (very  nice jewelry).  You can read more about him and Zulily via the NY Times here.  Zulily has also been featured in Forbes and People magazine, so it’s doing well for itself and definitely worth a look.

To all the mommies, daddies and parents-to-be, I truly hope this has been helpful.  If you can’t always get out to stores due to time constraints, online shopping is a great alternative.  No baby sitter required, no traffic and no pushy sales person.  Happy shopping!

Antiquing in Austin: Vintage Shopping Part II

Here’s the second installment of my Austin trip, as promised…

MAYA STAR

Why I Like This Store:  Ok, most of Maya’s offerings are brand spanking new, but it has some vintage-inspired fare and whether new or old, everything I saw was breathtakingly beautiful.  This boutique absolutely takes statement pieces to the next level.

Octopus Cocktail Ring

Brass Lion Head Cuff

Here are just a few of the many fabulous pieces Maya Star has on hand.

Cute Sequined Shorts

Many thanks to April for being so kind and pointing me in the direction of even more vintage stores!

Ann Klein Belt

Unique Owl Necklace

YSL Heels

Unfortunately, this is the point at which my camera battery died!  Please excuse the quality of the remaining pictures (taken with my cell phone).  Many, many thanks to Jenna & Jessica for being so sweet and informative- I so enjoyed meeting you!

And last, but certainly not least…
BY GEORGE

Why I Like This Store: By George plays host to a myriad of collections, all interesting and beautifully executed, one of which I discuss below.

You may not be able to tell from the mediocre cell phone picture, but this corduroy coat is a vibrant mustard color.  It also has an old-school flavor to it, due to thoughtful accents like the wooden buttons.  And, it was only about $150.

Admittedly, I am not familiar with the Leifsdottir brand, but from what I saw at By George, I am now a fan.  It’s distinctly feminine, and exudes a subtle air of strength and confidence.  This line is carried by Nordstrom and Saks, as well as other online shopping sites.  Thanks to the very fashionable Ashley & Veronica for all their help- I appreciate your time!

So next time you’re in Austin, take some time to visit the South Congress area.  It’s lively and full of really nice people, great restaurants, and fantastic shops.

Antiquing in Austin: Vintage Shopping Part I

So I took a quick trip to Austin this past weekend to attend a dear friend’s baby shower.  As recommended by Lauren Ulrick of FIG: A Taste of European Design, I visited the South Congress area for vintage shopping.

LUCY IN DISGUISE WITH DIAMONDS

Why I Like This Store: This is why I love Austin.  This shop embodies all that is wonderful about this city: diverse selections, ecletic collections and the friendliest folks you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting!  Lucy’s has an extensive selection of costumes for rent and vintage clothing, organized by decade.  The vintage accessories are mixed in with all other jewelry, which makes finding them a little challenging, but the vintage jewelry is marked as such and the employees are so sweet and will help you find anything you need. (Thank you Jasmine & Emily for helping me out!)

Isn’t this lion brooch to die for?!  It’s large enough to actually sit on your shoulder!  This would add a “wow factor” to any one-shouldered cocktail dress.

UNCOMMON OBJECTS

Why I Like This Store: This place is like a mini museum.  There are so many interesting “artifacts” that go beyond clothing and accessories.  They have furniture and home accessories, artwork and more.  Again, on the hunt for vintage lion jewelry, Lucy (another friendly employee!) showed me a few AMAZING pieces- I literally got chills!

This bracelet and two pendants were spectacular.  The artist really paid great attention to detail.  I almost went home with the bracelet, but I wasn’t ready to drop $250 just yet- I had a lot more stores to visit!

Here are a few pics of some of the other fascinating items in the store.

These were just two awesome stores I visited in Austin.  I am on my way out of town again, but I will definitely post about what I found at the other Austin stores when I return!  If you have questions, please contact me via Nik@threadconscious.com.  Also, find me on Facebook and Twitter via the links in the sidebar!

Media Monday: Fashion TV

Just a quick post today: My honey sent me a link to Fashion TV on YouTube.  I thought that maybe I’d seen this before and perhaps I have, but I hadn’t subscribed until now.  My internet connection was slow from my Austin hotel room, but I did manage to view a few videos and I really liked what I saw.  Fashion TV’s coverage does seem rather thorough and it’s great that not all videos consist of runway shows.

I enjoyed one video in particular about Sonia Rykiel, who has designed a line for H&M.  Now that Dallas is getting its very own H&M in 2011, I’m super excited to see what’s in store for all of us Thread Conscious fashionistas!

Behind the Seams- FIG: A Taste of European Fashion

Fort Worth, TX.  There’s a new FIG in town, and on the west side of the DFW metroplex.  Fort Worth is home to a new European ‘made to measure’ boutique, thanks to owners Dora Schabel and Robin Birdsong, two very talented (and very busy!) fashionistas.  I recently sat down with marketing director Sally Burt and merchandising manager Lauren Ulrick (pictured below, respectively) to discuss West 7th’s newest addition.  As we lounged in the front room of the studio, the ladies schooled me on European design, and why American women should embrace it.

According to Ulrick, many of us “play it safe, especially when it comes to business attire,” and I couldn’t agree more.  Far too often, women in the corporate sector find themselves confined to a dismal spectrum of black, gray, brown and other boring neutrals.  American women need no longer limit themselves; FIG is here to liberate us!

So why Fort Worth?  Believe or not, Dallas isn’t the only city where you can get your couture fix.  Fort Worth has many high-end boutiques and West 7th  is definitely an up and coming, upscale urban development- a perfect fit for FIG.  This city also boasts a strong retail support network called FOWO, or Fort Worth For Women.  This private business network focuses on supporting local women-owned retail businesses, with an emphasis on quality, community and personal service.  The women at FIG believe in those same ideals.  ”We’re not here to compete, but to create a market,” says Ulrick.  “We want customers to have a European experience here, one that’s relaxed, fun, not rushed.”  In agreement with this ‘European aesthetic’ Burt adds “we want this to be a good experience- when customer service is great, customers will want to return.”

I know the feeling.  I’ve visited three times since first discovering the design studio earlier last month.  There is something quite…transcendent about it all.  Surrounded by exquisite fabrics, one-of-a-kind accessories and an unparalleled attention to detail, not only in the clothing but also by the staff, it’s hard to stay away.  And that’s just the way FIG would have it.

What’s wonderfully unique about FIG is its “made to measure” concept.  As Burt explains, “people don’t understand this concept of ‘fitting perfectly.’  When we shop, we just have to take what’s there (a dress in a great color but with an odd hemline or pant with the right length but an ill-fitting waist), and then alter it.”  Well, at FIG, you don’t have to settle.  The ’made to measure’ concept takes the gamble and risk out of shopping.  Your measurements are taken and a garment is created exclusively for you!  Another unique feature of FIG is its fair trade model.  The European designers decide the price and maintain autonomy over their respective clothing lines.  Prices range on average from just $100 to $2000 for couture creations, including wedding dresses!

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to have a designer boutique of this caliber in Fort Worth.  While I love Dallas, everything designer need not be located there.  And by the way, in case you’re feeling a tingling of sticker shock, Thread Conscious has never been about being cheap; it’s about finding quality pieces for reasonable prices.  And that’s exactly what FIG has.

For more information, visit FIG here or watch the video from their website below.

Nik
