Bringing the Old In with the New Year!

Hello Everyone,

As we count down the last couple of hours of 2009, I’m reminded of the old adage “Out with old, in with the new!”

That’s all well and good, but I firmly believe that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. In other words old doesn’t necessarily equal obsolete…

We all know fashion is cyclical- for better or for worse, trends do repeat. I must admit, the 80′s revival, or should I say revulsion, left much to be desired. I mean, c’mon, acid-washed jeans, shoulder pads and harem pants? Hot mess!

Unlike the 80′s, one trend I hope never dies is the glamour of the 20′s, 30′s, 40′s. I do believe a vintage resurgence is around the corner: this year Essence did a gorgeous spread featuring chanteuse Amerie in 1920′s flapper apparel and Vogue’s September Issue featured a piece titled “in the mood,” paying homage to the smoldering sultriness of 1940′s garb. Classic, tasteful, timeless. What’s not to love?

Luckily, right after Christmas, I was able to score a few vintage treasures myself, courtesy of my Mom and Eastside Antiques on Lancaster in Fort Worth. Eastside is a veritable treasure trove of vintage baubles- I discovered an entire jewelry section I apparently missed on my first visit there months ago!

They had all kinds of tassle necklaces, brooches, rings and so much more- on sale! And the real treasures of Eastside? The sales associates! They are so sweet, knowledgeable and helpful. I WILL be shopping there again!

Thanks Mom for the vintage fur stoles, hats and handkerchiefs and thanks to Eastside Antiques for the necklaces, gloves and pins! (I’ll be back for that 1950′s Christian Dior hat!)

Chic Shopping at Central Market

Stephanie at Central Market

Stephanie at Central Market- Chic Shopping!

So, as I strolled down the soup and bean aisle at Central Market, I saw them: raspberry Jeffrey Campbell flats with playful pom-pom fringe at the toe. Smitten! I HAD to ask the adorable girl wearing them where she found such treasure. “Shoe Gypsy on Park Hill” she cooed with a smile. Truth be told, I’ve never driven down Park Hill except to get a gyro at the Greek House, and now that I’m vegetarian, I haven’t been there in ages!

Now I had to make a proper introduction, as I was practically drooling over this poor girl’s shoes…in the grocery store no less. Her name is Stephanie and her outfit was just as adorable as her shoes. It exuded effortless chic, the best kind no doubt, the kind of chicness that whispers, “I am so stylish, I don’t even have to think about it. It just comes naturally to me.” Well, we aren’t all so lucky, and some of us do try too hard, but I must say, Ms. Stephanie’s ensemble struck just the right notes of casual-cool-quirkiness with a side of sass, and that, my friends, ain’t easy to do.

So here’s to you, Stephanie, oh-thread-conscious-one. Well done. Well done.

Free at last! Final exams are over!

Tonight, I took my last final exam- I cannot tell you all how glad I am it’s over. Now I can breathe a sigh of relief, at least for a moment…

So, better late than never…as promised, attached are a few pics of the gluttony that was Thanksgiving. I even made fried ice cream this year! So fried turkey, fried ice cream, fried everything…I’m going on a diet!

It’s my sincere hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season; may the year 2010 bring you everything your heart desires!

Fashionably yours,
Nik
