Bringing the Old In with the New Year!

Hello Everyone,

As we count down the last couple of hours of 2009, I’m reminded of the old adage “Out with old, in with the new!”

That’s all well and good, but I firmly believe that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. In other words old doesn’t necessarily equal obsolete…

We all know fashion is cyclical- for better or for worse, trends do repeat. I must admit, the 80′s revival, or should I say revulsion, left much to be desired. I mean, c’mon, acid-washed jeans, shoulder pads and harem pants? Hot mess!

Unlike the 80′s, one trend I hope never dies is the glamour of the 20′s, 30′s, 40′s. I do believe a vintage resurgence is around the corner: this year Essence did a gorgeous spread featuring chanteuse Amerie in 1920′s flapper apparel and Vogue’s September Issue featured a piece titled “in the mood,” paying homage to the smoldering sultriness of 1940′s garb. Classic, tasteful, timeless. What’s not to love?

Luckily, right after Christmas, I was able to score a few vintage treasures myself, courtesy of my Mom and Eastside Antiques on Lancaster in Fort Worth. Eastside is a veritable treasure trove of vintage baubles- I discovered an entire jewelry section I apparently missed on my first visit there months ago!

They had all kinds of tassle necklaces, brooches, rings and so much more- on sale! And the real treasures of Eastside? The sales associates! They are so sweet, knowledgeable and helpful. I WILL be shopping there again!

Thanks Mom for the vintage fur stoles, hats and handkerchiefs and thanks to Eastside Antiques for the necklaces, gloves and pins! (I’ll be back for that 1950′s Christian Dior hat!)

I hope you all have a safe and Happy New Year!

Chic Shopping at Central Market

Stephanie at Central Market

Stephanie at Central Market- Chic Shopping!

So, as I strolled down the soup and bean aisle at Central Market, I saw them: raspberry Jeffrey Campbell flats with playful pom-pom fringe at the toe. Smitten! I HAD to ask the adorable girl wearing them where she found such treasure. “Shoe Gypsy on Park Hill” she cooed with a smile. Truth be told, I’ve never driven down Park Hill except to get a gyro at the Greek House, and now that I’m vegetarian, I haven’t been there in ages!

Now I had to make a proper introduction, as I was practically drooling over this poor girl’s shoes…in the grocery store no less. Her name is Stephanie and her outfit was just as adorable as her shoes. It exuded effortless chic, the best kind no doubt, the kind of chicness that whispers, “I am so stylish, I don’t even have to think about it. It just comes naturally to me.” Well, we aren’t all so lucky, and some of us do try too hard, but I must say, Ms. Stephanie’s ensemble struck just the right notes of casual-cool-quirkiness with a side of sass, and that, my friends, ain’t easy to do.

So here’s to you, Stephanie, oh-thread-conscious-one. Well done. Well done.

Free at last! Final exams are over!

Tonight, I took my last final exam- I cannot tell you all how glad I am it’s over. Now I can breathe a sigh of relief, at least for a moment…

So, better late than never…as promised, attached are a few pics of the gluttony that was Thanksgiving. I even made fried ice cream this year! So fried turkey, fried ice cream, fried everything…I’m going on a diet!

It’s my sincere hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season; may the year 2010 bring you everything your heart desires!

Accents Fashion Accessories in Arlington! Dallas Women’s Museum Exhibit!

Accents Fashion Accessories

Hello,
I am happy to announce the opening of Accents Fashion Accessories in Arlington Highlands off I-20 and Matlock! The first store is located in Dallas in the West End and it was always a trek for me to get over there, so it’s great that the store in now in Tarrant County. : )

I met Lucy Crowhurst, the owner, a couple of years of ago, and she is the sweetest person! She’s also an exceptional business woman, with a little one at home and one on the way, so kudos to you Lucy!

What’s great about this shop is that it’s meticulously organized, in my opinion. I too often find that stores geared toward the female persuasion are a hot mess when it comes to organization- clothes are strewn all over the store, sale items are mixed in with regular items, other products are thrown into huge bins in which you literally have to dig to see all the merchandise. Eh hem, that’s hell on a fresh, new manicure. Not cute, I tell ya, not cute at all.

Anyhoo, Accents has everything displayed for easy access and observation. No clutter on display, just cuteness on hangers and tables. Now that’s what I call sensible chic! I love cocktail rings and I have to admit, Accents had some of the most unique pieces I’ve seen, and I went to the Dallas Jewelry show at Market Hall in Dallas this October! I saw no repeats! My fav color is gray/silver and I found an adorable ring with gray stones set in gold. In 2007 D Magazine recognized Accents as its pick for best Dallas shopping and The Dallas Observer honored the store in two catergories, “Best Store in West Village” and “Best Shiny Objects.” I couldn’t agree more. Check out my pics and Accents in the Arlington Highlands! You can also shop online at http://www.accentsfashionaccessories.com/index.php.

Great shopping!

As for the Dallas Women’s Museum, it has a very special exhibit going on now through Jan. 24, 2010:
“Purse & the Person: A Century of Women’s Purses”
In the words of “The Zoe,” “I die.” I want to see this exhibit, after final exams of course, and if I get a chance to go, I’ll report back what I find. One of the purposes of this blog is to examine fashion on a higher intellectual level, and I can’t think of a better starting topic than this. Lastly, I like volunteering with this museum, though I regret it’s not nearly as often as I’d like. I missed the Wine Women & Shoes extravaganza this year which is always a blast. But at least I have time to check out this exhibit. For more information, please see

Shecky’s Girls Night Out- Dallas

The line to get in was insane! So worth the wait though!

So, I was lucky enough to attend for the 2nd time the always fun and fashionable Shecky’s Girls Night Out event at the Fashion Industry Gallery in Dallas. It was perfect timing because I seriously needed a study break! There was such a long line outside, but it was well worth the wait. Once inside, I made a bee line to the Goodie Bag area, as Shecky’s is famous for its superb Goodie Bags.

Ladies in Line

Oh Goodie Goodie!

What I love about this event are all the unique treasures you can find at a bargain. I’m talking “Shopping Mecca!” Plus a lot of designers are right here in Dallas and it’s so important to support local talent. One such talent is Ms. Jennifer Blumenstock of three bishops jewelry collection. Featured in Fort Worth Magazine’s August 2009 Issue, and seen on HBO’s popular series Entourage, three bishops offers pieces that are thoughtfully unique and simply stunning. The Signature Collection is at once regal, yet refreshingly unpretentious. The entire line has a deeply spiritual feel to it. See http://www.threebishops.com.

Speaking of spiritual, meet Ms. Jana Camp of Janaration. This “Yoga Inspired Jewelry” is like the California designer- youthful, down-to-earth and naturally beautiful- and I couldn’t leave without snapping up a gorgeous necklace- it was too perfect for Halloween and all the Fall Festivities! Check out Jana’s website at http://www.janaration.com.

If you love more vintage-inspired fair, (think: Anthropologie or Urban Outfitters) check out Sarah Elizabeth Eastep’s http://www.manekicollection.com. She has the most adorable cameo rings and necklaces, and many of the vintage staples of the animal kingdom, such as owls, horses, foxes and birds. Each piece is feminine, delicate and decadent, while being reasonably priced.

Lastly, I saw an incredible chain metal scarf (yes, metal) from Moonpie & Felicity Rose. They are hand-made and come in different lengths, making them versatile and stunning. A little pricier, (I think the shorter versions was around $90) these scarves are wearable works of art and well worth the price tag. For more info, contact Amy Kaplan at MOONPIEFR@AOL.COM.

Shecky’s Girls Night Out will return to Dallas February 24-25, 2010. Hope to see you there!
