Many people may not view October, or more specifically Halloween, as a fashion opportunity, but it’s a highly anticipated event for me. Beyond the dream of attending a masked ball one day, I think this holiday affords people the one opportunity to celebrate fashion freely, without further notice to rules or even good taste. While humorous and tacky costumes abound, I’d like to think Halloween could be elevated to something more, even Haute Halloween. I can pinpoint when this October appreciation started- it was born of one enchanting ensemble worn by the Grand Dame of delightfully irreverent fashion herself, Carrie Bradshaw, in the first Sex & The City Movie. I’ve never forgotten the ebony chevron coat, studded belt and knee high boots that mirrored Carrie’s life at that time- showing that fierce and fragile are not mutually exclusive feelings.
Over the years, my appreciation for eternally chic black-on-black pieces has grown into a full blown Pinterest board: October’s Best Dressed. If I had my way, I’d fill all 31 days with deliciously dark pieces paired with restrained pops of green, orange and purple. I include everything from pencil skirts and blazers, all the way to goth-chic post-apocalyptic tunics, which makes for a very fun board.
