I’m building my fashion documentary library and just watched Gucci: The Director about a week ago on Showtime. Produced by Christina Voros and James Franco (is there anything he can’t do?), the film follows the life and career of Creative Director Frida Giannini for 18 months.
I love seeing the inner workings of a company- it’s one of the best ways to learn how a business is run. Glitz and glamour are stripped away and you’re left with a very real impression, and gratitude, for Giannini and all the unnamed, indispensable people who make it work. Giannini herself is driven, smart and and refreshingly humble- a winning combination. While the clothes and fashion shows are stunning, one of my favorite scenes in the film has nothing to do with fashion. It takes place while Giannini cooks a meal for her family at their beach house and her father speaks about her core values:
“My pride is that Frida is beautiful on the inside. Frida in her private life is a very simple person, and she is happy, because she feels fulfilled when she is with her family. This is what we’ve always valued and she understood it throughout all these years. I’m glad that she achieved success, with all the advantages that it entails…She never got lost along the way.”
I think that quote embodies the true definition of success. May we all be so fortunate in work and life.
